President Asks Lawmakers To Come Together On "Critical Challenge"
- Why are the Mexicans so eager to leave their own country? Have they no allegiance to their homeland? And if they have no national allegiance why would they be good citizens for the US? They do not appear to be patriotic people or care at all for the USA.

- Randal, I have nothing against the Mexican people. I have a problem with our laws not being enforced and blatant fraud being committed. We must enforce our laws that's all there is to it. To not do so will create racism.

And I think the answer is to change the laws, to have a guest worker program and to give them a real chance to immigrate here legally. Right now it is nearly impossible to immigrate here legally from Mexico. We need to open the process up a LOT and provide a realistic path to citizenship for those already here. It's not about enforcing the law to me, because I believe the law is bad and wrong in this case. Let's make the law realistic, then the whole concept of illegal aliens goes away. - Reply to this comment

- What deportation?
Posted by bellaL at 03:28 AM : Apr 29, 2007
Many many do get deported. Sure many of them come right back, but a lot of them have long established jobs and homes here (many that they own), they're kids are in school, etc. and deportation is a huge problem for them if it happens. They have to re-establish their jobs and in some cases lose their businesses. That's one of the reasons why it'd be so hard to deport them all. Many of them have been here ten or 20 years or more. The disruption to the communities they live in would be catastrophic. - Reply to this comment
- Not going to happen Randal. Hey are you watching SNL? It's a repeat and Carrie Underwood does a great performance at the end. She has a phenomenal voice.

I like her, but I'm watching The Slums of Beverly Hills on HBO right now...again. Good movie. - Reply to this comment

- Randal, you have absolutely nothing to back that up. If anything it's under stated. Why should we give away our education, healthcare, welfare, and every other service available to people who are'nt even Americans? And as far as costs skyrocketing, THAT'S what's exagerated.
Posted by bellaL at 03:08 AM : Apr 29, 2007
What I have to back it up is living in Los Angeles. What I see are the many illegals who are working hard. Yes they are using services such as schools and hospitals, but then again they also pay taxes. Sure the ones you see at Home Depot don't, but all of the ones I know have taxes taken out of their checks just like mine and, since many of them are working under phony social security numbers, they don't get any of that money back at the end of the year because they can't file taxes. Also they'll never see a dime of the money they pay into social security out of their checks because it's not their number. They lose a lot more then they use around these parts. And I don't know a one who is collecting public assistance such as welfare or food stamps because they can't take the chance on exposing themselves to deportation. - Reply to this comment

- Better be careful there, Mr.Randal, you're sounding an awful lot like a neocon.
Posted by bellaL at 03:11 AM : Apr 29, 2007
lol. No still a liberal, but a realist. I don't support international adventurism like the neocons do, but I still believe that someday in the not to distant future the US, Canada and Mexico will in-effect be one nation, economically and politically. I can't see how it can be avoided if the three are to survive in the coming Chinese dominated world. - Reply to this comment
- In the real world the US can not stand alone any longer. Our labor costs are too high, our industries are fleeing and our natural resources are shrinking. If we intend to compete in the world markets in the long haul then we will be forced to consolidate our economy Posted by RandalDS at 03:00 AM : Apr 29, 2007

- The answer is that we need to band together with Mexico, instead of fighting against them. In the first place they are an ally, not our enemy and they could become a very valuable asset in an exchange of goods and services that would benefit us both. In the real world the US can not stand alone any longer. Our labor costs are too high, our industries are fleeing and our natural resources are shrinking. If we intend to compete in the world markets in the long haul then we will be forced to consolidate our economy with Mexico, and hopefully Canada too. If we don't establish a common market with the other nations in our hemisphere, like the Europeans are doing as well as the Chinese and the Indians, then in a generation or two we'll be the ones falling out of the first world and down into the third.

- Stop providing services and enforce our current laws and they'll go back to Mexico. Why should they stay here if they can't find jobs and can't get govt. aid. The whole thing has gotten so out of hand it's crazy. I blame Reagan.

The amount of government aid they get is wildly over-exaggerated. As for enforcing our employment laws that's not going to happen either. Food prices would skyrocket as would prices in the service industries from hotels and restaurants to landscaping and construction. The only way most of them stay in business is employing illegals. If they had to pay Americans real wages to do those jobs the prices for their goods and services would price them out of the market. Even more of our food would be imported because it'd be cheaper and a night at a Holiday Inn would cost $400. - Reply to this comment
- The right wing is using the Mexican immigrant as a scapegoat for any economic ills this country is suffering. If you asked the average American, typically fat, uneducated, overweight and stupid, to do any manual labor. Good freakin' luck.
All these rightwing obesely fat and lazy trail trash right wing idiots wouldn't survive one day doing the manual labor these immigrants are doing for minimum wage or less. Put Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O' Rielly, George Bush, *** Cheney or Karl Rove to work picking produce and I'll bet money none of these rightwing windbags would last a week much less a day doing this type of labor. - Reply to this comment

- ENFORCE THE IMMIGRATION LAWS AND CLOSE THE BORDER FOR A FEW YEARS. NO AMNESTY!! DEPORT ALL 12 MILLION PLUS!
Posted by drivelphobe at 11:47 PM : Apr 28, 2007
How about a realistic answer? Deporting all of the illegal aliens in this country is simply not going to happen. We don't have enough law enforcement of military personal to drive 11 or 12 million people out of this country without a bloodbath. It is NOT an option. Not matter how you come down on future enforcement the idea of throwing out the ones already here is laughable in how impossible it is. It's something right wingers say to themselves in bars after having a few beers. It is not going to happen, so get past that idea. - Reply to this comment
- Randal, this has NOTHING to do with racism and EVERYTHING to do with economics. We're going to have a new wave of racism if this isn't dealt with soon.
Posted by bellaL at 02:13 AM : Apr 29, 2007
I disagree. I fact I think it has very much to do with racism. For instance the "minutemen" are basically more well behaved KKK members, minus the white sheets. This migration is no different then when the Irish came here in waves. The racism against them was brutal and bloody, but they still came and they DID assimilate. The Mexicans will too. - Reply to this comment

What's that have to do with anything?
Posted by bellaL at 01:37 AM : Apr 29, 2007
What it has to do with this is that whenever you scratch the surface of just about anyone who is opposed to immigration from the south, just beneath the surface you find racism. I don't believe people when they say "if only they were coming here legally", because that just doesn't cut it for me. Every time a large group of people has come to this country many of the people who were already here said things like "Oh they're taking our jobs" or "They won't learn the language" or "They'll never assimilate" and every single time they were shown to be wrong. Every single time they added to what America is a whole lot more then they took away. It was the same with every nationality here. Itailan, Irish, Jews, Dutch, Germans, French and on and on and on. - Reply to this comment
