Comments on: Senator Reid On Iraq: "This War Is Lost"
Democratic Majority Leader Says Troop Buildup Is Not Working
- Civilized nations agreed to fight wars on a level playing field for the most part. This was the basis of the Geneva Convention, things like treating prisoners fairly without torture, allowing prisoners medical treatment and mail. Even the choice or weapons and the size of bullets and munitions were agreed upon. Now civilized nations are fighting against a radical extremist Islamic enemy who does not abide by the Geneva Convention and takes no prisoners and even goes as far as to execute captured prisoners gangster style with gun shots to the head and cutting prisoner heads off on the web for the world to see. Suggesting a level playing field to fight an enemy like this is not being a Nazi and in fact even the Nazi's were not as nasty as these Islamic terrorist who in my view are nothing short of barbaric.

- ajmarine1,
The way I see it, most of the American & Iraqi publics have lost faith in the ability of our governments to take the necessary actions. If there were new approaches along with the surge taken people might allow it more time.
I believe Congress is using the timetable to force Bush to act . We're hearing now that the surge is open-ended, it wasn't supposed to be.
If come fall, it's going badly, I hope we don't just run for the copters. I hope we have a diplomatic effort going.
Shouldn't we at least be trying to engage the Arab League? Just because they didn't support us going in doesn't mean that we don't have a common stake in the ultimate outcome.
The Iranians and Syrians are enjoying watching us go through this but they won't enjoy being flooded with refugees and being drawn into a regional Sunni-Shiite War when we pull out.
If we do lose the War it will be because Bush refuses to change. I hope he can see the light before then and follow the advice of the Iraq Study Group. - Reply to this comment
- Saying the war is lost is a LIE.
You Bush-bashers are quick to condemn the President for lying about WMD. Here is Harry Reid LYING and no one says anything.
Just add Harry Reid to the list of lying politicians:
'I am not a crook' - Richard Nixon
'I did not have sexual relations with that woman' - Bill Clinton
'This war is lost' - Harry Reid - Reply to this comment
- "We can NOT win this [Iraq] war militarily."
Gen. Petreus - Feb 2007
Any questions????

You have to understand Gen. Petreus's remark in the context it was made. What Gen. Petreus meant in my view was, with the current "rules of engagement" "We can NOT win this [Iraq] war militarily." Gen. Petreus could very easily win this war militarily if he were allowed a free hand and could decide on his own "rules of engagement", no doubt in my mind! People won't like it, but it is possible to win militarily!! - Reply to this comment
- gdmore2 & realpatriot1,
In the Marines, we say, "We don't make grand strategy, we just go where the "Man" tells use to go.
I don't know who Bush consults with and I don't think we know all the goverment, nor should we, knows.
I just fear that we and our future generations are in for the fight of our lives and we need to present a unity front to all our enemies or we are going to be in big trouble. - Reply to this comment
- AJMarine1: Thanks for your post, and for your service.
I hope we are able to acheive victory in the larger war on terror, but the U.S. seems badly positioned in this battle in Iraq. When troops have to start erecting walls between Baghdad neighborhoods, and Gates starts talking about "long term surge", then the odds do not look good. How many military leaders advised Bush not to go into Iraq, and here we are.
It is not the troops' fault for being handed a lousy situation from poor political leadership. - Reply to this comment
- ajmarine1,
Your position is totally reasonable and I trully hope it pans out. Even though I believe that the surge won't work because the administration won't supplement militery action with diplomatic action, I hear what you're saying that the troops aren't totally in place. So I'll personally withhold judgement on that.
What I don't withhold judgement on is that the Congress has to pressure this administration which has been reluctant to change course. The so-called timetable that Bush rejects would not redeploy troops until well after we have a chance to see if the surge is going to work.
I do agree that Reid's choice of words was unfortunate, even though I agree with the conclusion. I don't see how it helps anyone and I would have preferred it if he had said that without greater diplomatic efforts, this war will soon be lost. - Reply to this comment

- I am a x-Marine, Viet Nam vet (69), I believe we were right in taking out Saddam, but I'm not here to agrue that; everyone has their talking points and I don't think we are going to change anyones point of view at this stage to the game.
However, this surge is probably our last best chance to finish what we have started and then bring our troops home. We are in the middle of this and it will be July before all our troops are in place. If this doesn't work, I will be right in front saying bring our troops home, but you can't say we have "lost" when the fight is not over yet.
When our enemies hear talk like this, it just makes them fight harder.
Victory will not be just a military operation, but with political changes and a strong military to enforce then, we can bring this to a successful end; if not, then I will say "we have lost." - Reply to this comment
- Wake up Loonie! No Senator has decided that the war is over, the American people have decided that its over!
After Bush was "re-elected" by point shaving(election workers in Ohio have gone to jail for their part in the matter), he had the nerve to claim a mandate. Reid and Pelosi have a real mandate!
Democracy sucks when you lose, just ask Chalabi in Iraq. - Reply to this comment

The Marines are broken down into 3 groups of Marines and its sounds like you belong to the 3rd group, there are good Marines, bad Marines and **********, you sound like a ********** to me! The "experts" you speak of have not been directing this Iraq war! The "experts" are the Marines fighting this war at the lowest levels on a daily basis, the same as in Vietnam. No one listens to the real "experts", the ones who really know the deal, who really know whats going on out there on the real ground! Its time to think "outside the box" as they say and try a different approach! I would put the Marines behind closed doors "at ease" and let them speak freely, something Marines rarely get a chance to do because Marines loyally follow orders, even stupid orders! Then I would ask the "real experts", If you were in charge, what would you do, how would you win this conflict?" The solution to this Iraq conflict is in those groups of Marines, trust me, I know what I'm talking about! The other "experts", the ones running the show now don't have a clue, with all due respect of course! The politics I speak of are the ground rules of fighting this war. In every fighting sport the fighters fight by the same rules, in war, those same rules are the Geneva Convention, these terrorist are not fighting by the Geneva Convention and therefore have a fighting advantage! The terrorist can do what they please and the Marines should be allowed to do the same, see, this is bad Marine logic, my group! :) - Reply to this comment

- When in the history of the United States has a Senator ever 'decided' a war was over? It has never happened. It is not up to any single Senator to decide when a war is over. That is the responsibility of the President. Apparently Reid thinks HE is President of the United States.

tank, he is just representing the will of his constituency. the people in his district and the rest of the nation, for that matter, have voiced their displeasure with the way bush has handled the war. if he wants to say the war is lost, he has the right to. he was elected in his district. its up to the to decide if his statements are correct. w
where did he say " i want to stop the war myself" you are wrong, in saying he thinks hes the president, thats a bunch of shiite!
you should be more coincerned about the idiot you voted for and how he has ruined amereica and botched the war in iraq. more people are on reids side ,then the draft dodger, bush. - Reply to this comment
- Ahmad Bahr: "You will be victorious" on the face of this planet. You are the masters of the world on the face of this planet. Yes, [the Koran says that] "you will be victorious," but only "if you are believers." Allah willing, "you will be victorious," while America and Israel will be annihilated, Allah willing. I guarantee you that the power of belief and faith is greater than the power of America and Israel. They are cowards, as is said in the Book of Allah: "You shall find them the people most eager to protect their lives." They are cowards, who are eager for life, while we are eager for death for the sake of Allah. That is why America's nose was rubbed in the mud in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in Somalia, and everywhere.

God what is it with you Nazi's? Give you a Swastika and YOU become an expert in EVERYTHING. You losers think, just as those around Hitler, that keeping people for SAYING the Truth, keeping them for stating the obvious and what so many are saying to themselves, will change that reality. GROW up!! You can silence every "liberal" in this nation and Bush is still a failure. You can silence ALL that speak out the truth and Bush is still Incompetent. You can keep up this insanity for 20 more years and Bush STILL LOST! REALITY is something you Nazi's has never understoond. When you have the most POWERFUL Military in the World and you can't stop the fighting in a Country the size of Ohio, you LOST Sparky. Sieg Heil - Reply to this comment
- Can you imagine, during the Revolutionary War,if the majority leader of the Senate had given an interview to a London newspaper saying the war is lost. He would have been charged with treason, and rightly so.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA I'm sure glad YOU losers fought for the KING!! What's with you Nazi's anyway? What's wrong with the TRUTH about this MESS you and your Fuehrer have created for a CHANGE! This may well be the FIRST real truth the people have heard but you Nazi's? Well anyone telling the Truth and that TRUTH doesn't match the rantings of the Fuehrer? Well that person is a Traitor! Do YOU think we won? If so can you tell me where and HOW. FOUR long years and the situation in Iraq is WORSE than when we got there and you think we won? I guess there's a reason your fascist... stupidity being that reason. Sieg Heil Y'all. - Reply to this comment
