Possessing a CCW permit would probably escalate the charges the aide might face. Terms like "unfortunate" and "unintentional" are not considered by the DOJ as valid excuses to introduce loaded guns into the Capitol. The haphazard toting of weapons and ammunition, like drugs, can be the cause of one having his PeePee severely whacked.

Indeed fellow patriot. I'm a registered Independent voter but since I believe in the Constitution most would consider me a liberal. It is very, very, unfortunate that the Republican Party betrayed our country and can today only be labeled fascist, not conservative.

In any case, it is critical to protect and uphold the Second Amendment, a citizens right to bear arms, so that our people do not become easy prey for a well armed government, or common street villians. That's why our founding fathers, whose wisdom often still stuns me today, put it in the Constitution.

I understand the anti-gun argument, and that these people unfortunately believe that guns do more harm than good. But this is not so. Every year far more peoples lives are saved by our armed citizenry than are hurt.

The tragic accidents with children gaining access to guns and other deaths can almost always be traced to the irresponsibility of a few gun owners, and I believe that these owners should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for their negligence, especially if it results in injury or death.

The answer is certainly not to strip our citizenry of all its defenses.

I don't know why this is an issue. Web has a conceal and carry permit for Virginia and his aid acidentaly grabbed the wrong bag or grabbed a bag that he was not aware had a gun in it.

This was totaly unintentional so why are they charging him?

As a liberal, I have struggled with this issue, but I DO agree with you on this one. I am big on following the Bill of Rights and the 2nd Amendment guarantees us this right. Interestingly enough, many Democratic congressmen from the South are also in the NRA. Rep. Mike Ross from my state of Arkansas is a good example.

As a gun owner myself I am not sure if it is a "left" or "right" issue. I would like the discussion to be more of a crime issue. Unfortunately we are becoming more of a violent society. My own view on this leans more towards the break-up of the family unit and an overall o.k. attittude with the violence portrayed in films, video games, and music. I think we are becoming insensitive to it all. I also think parents need to really be apart of their childrens lives and find out what they are watching, reading and listening to. It is not an easy issue and I may not have expressed it clearly but it really does start with the family.
Anyways I'm done in here for the day.

Let's face it, this kind of cavalier gun-slinging is a cultural artifact among men from rural backgrounds who do it to feel empowered in ways their rural culture recognizes, but at the expense of reason and safety. Under no circumstances should a member of Congress be carrying a weapon into the Capitol, and the Second Amendment does not protect routine carrying of firearms by people without connections to a "duly constituted militia". This was a boneheaded thing to do and Webb is going to have to grow up fast lest he go from "red dog" to "dead dog" Democrat...

That was reported by the AP on March 9th. An appeal is likely to reach the U.S. Supreme Court, FYI.... All indications are that the handgun ban in D.C. will be overturned.

I read that...now maybe law abiding citizens can
purchase a firearm for protection. D.C. is always in the running for murder capitol of the U.S.

Webb needs to come clean and not let his friend take the blame.

In the state I live in you do not need a permit to carry a concealed weapon. We also have one of the lowest crime rates in the country.

Guns don't kill people crimnals do...if not a gun then something else to commit the crime.

As to your question, considering this case is in the hands of the Justice Department - which is still firmly in the Republican grasp - perhaps you should ask THEM why they're not moving on this. As long as Jefferson isn't willing to resign (despite Dem calls for that), we're stuck with "Dollar Bill".

As for your statement that media is focused on Republicans (he says, commenting on a story that focuses on a Democrat), as folks seem so quick to forget, the media was focused on the Dems before they were booted out of the majority a decade-plus ago. Why? Because they were corrupt. Well, it's 2007 and it's now the Republicans who are corrupt, so that's who the news are focused on. Pretty logical, really.

This aid is a trusted and loyal staffer to Jim webb by his own words. Webb gave the weapon to him while the aid drove him to the airport. Guess it was a good thing Webb remembered the gun and not accidentally go through airport security with it. Otherwise according to some of you folks we would have WWIII on our hands. The aid forgot it was in his breifcase when he re-entered the senate building. Thats all is it folks. Its not a national incident.GET OVER IT !!!!!!!!

Please tell us the media tried to cover up Monicagate and the assorted allegations. We could all use a good laugh. Tell us how they hardly ever mentioned it.

(e.g. NBC sure wasn't pulling their weight in the coverup when they assigned a well known foe of the Clintons, reporter Lisa Myers, to interview Juanita Broaddrick on prime time TV.)
