Comments on: Why Should Hillary Apologize On Iraq?
Refusal To Recant '02 Vote May Serve Clinton Well In The Long Run
- Poor Hillary, the little lamb that was misled by the big bad wolf in the white house. Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo. She said what was popular at the time, now she will say whats popular now. She will tell you anything you want to hear as long as it gets her as$ in the oval office. You all want to hear her say "sorry" or "mistake." Just stay tuned, won't be long now.

Intelligence information comes from all over the world. We have spies, they have spies. Information designed to mislead us comes from different groups. Other governments provide intelligence information. In addition, we have congressional committees and subcommittees gathering information, the military gathering information, the CIA and the FBI gathering information, and others such as the Justice Department. In america, intelligence gathering has been dumbed down under different administrations and Congress. Remember the law that prohibited the FBI and the CIA from sharing information. On Iraq, everybody was looking at the same information and drawing the same conclusions including Germany, France, and Brittain. Nobody should have to apologize for supporting the war in Iraq based upon the intelligence information. Instead, we need to beef up our intelligence gathering and analysis so that information is valid in the future. Whether George Bush or Al Gore were president after 9/11, the conclusions would probably be the same based on the intelligence information of the day. - Reply to this comment

- Hey mcc8516,
Here's another quote from Pelosi in 1998, was she lying then too?
"I come to this debate, Mr. Speaker, as one at the end of 10 years in office on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, where stopping the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction was one of my top priorities. I applaud the President on focusing on this issue and on taking the lead to disarm Saddam Hussein. ... Others have talked about this threat that is posed by Saddam Hussein. Yes, he has chemical weapons, he has biological weapons, he is trying to get nuclear weapons."

- Hey mcc8516,
Read this quote from Pelosi in 1998 and tell me, was Pelosi lying?
"As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."

- Go read this transcript, not only did she vote for bush when she knew he was lying (if she didn't know he was lying and was "fooled by bush" she should resign because she's incompetent) but she also continued supporting the BS war long after they knew there were no WMD's.

- Of course Bush and his administration is responsible for the war; that doesn't let Hillary Clinton off the hook. Nearly every day the major newspapers ran stories questioning the WMD rationale. Former government officials, intelligence experts and members of the CIA were extrememly skeptical and saw no hard evidence for these contentions, Chalabi and one former discredited CIA informant making up nearly all of the *evidence*. Many of us knew that the US was supporting Hussein when he supposedly gassed the Iranians, provided him with intelligence, weapons and money for years, and were the only country that voted against a UN resolution to condemn him for the Iranian gassing. That that was being used as a pretext for attacking him was patently absurd. If I knew that, Hillary Clinton certaintly did. Don't see any courage or leadership abilities here, nor any real difference with GWB's foreign policy. It doesn't seem to bother HRC that it was wrong, only that we're not winning. Imperious, condescending, like it or lump it attitude - don't like it any better in a Democratic package than I have in a Republican one.

- Hillary did what a majority of American Republicans and Democrats did: she put her trust in the President of the United States. He told the country that we needed to go to war because Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. I remember that at the time the UN Inspectors said they could not find those weapons. Later we learned that our President was stretching the truth. We learned that there were no such weapons stockpiled in Iraq. Meanwhile two and a half years ago our President told us "Mission Accomplished." How many American soldiers have died since our mission was accomplished?
So, with all this in mind, exactly who should actually apologize to the American people? - Reply to this comment
- Hillary did what a majority of both Republicans and Democrats did - she believed the President of the United States when he said that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. But now we all know that we were all misled. Next we were misled about how easy it would be to establish a democracy in Iraq. Hillary has nothing to apologize for. Initially supporting the Commander In Chief is not something she should apologize for. We all only found out later that our President did not base his reasons for going to war on good intelligence. So, exactly who should apologize?

- MR. RUSSERT: Senator Clinton, what should the American people know about the number of American troops that will have to remain in Iraq for a considerable period of time?
So I think that what the American people need to know is, number one, we are very proud of our young men and women who are here, active duty, Guard and Reserve. We've seen many of them today, and we'll see more of them tomorrow. And so we all can be very grateful for their service and also very admiring of their sacrifice for other people's freedom. But secondly, we need to make sure that this new government in Iraq can succeed. There are lots of debates about, you know, whether we should have, how we should have, decisions that were made along the way with respect to our involvement here. But where we stand right now, there can be no doubt that it is not in America's interests for the Iraqi government, the experiment in freedom and democracy, to fail. So I hope that Americans understand that and that we will have as united a front as is possible in our country at this time to keep our troops safe, make sure they have everything they need and try to support this new Iraqi government.

SEN. CLINTON: Well, Tim, we have just finished meeting with the current prime minister, the deputy prime minister and the finance minister, and in our meetings, we posed the question to each of them as to whether they believed that we should set a firm deadline for the withdrawal of American troops. To a person, and they are of different political parties in this election, but each of them said that would be a big mistake, that we needed to make clear that there is a transition now going on to the Iraqi government. When it is formed, which we hope will be shortly, it will assume responsibility for much of the security, with the assistance and cooperation of the coalition forces, primarily U.S. forces.

- Hillary doesn't need to apologize. The ones who do need to do that are either no longer in Congress or they are in the White House...who came up with this "apology" nonsense? She did what she thought was right for America at the time and given the so called facts she and all the rest of the members of Congress were given that voted for support. Let's not kid ourselves into believing she was given good information...therefore, no need for any apology.

- Non Verbers starts by comparing Hillary to Mel Gibson and Britney Spears? I knew then I didn't want my my rational thinking mind poluted by the
slanted pontifications of Von Verbers "forked tongue" Verbage. Hillary did the right thing based on the information she had and the public sentiment of her constituants after nine-eleven.
No One would have believed that the Presidents case was so irrational or that his subsequent handling of the War would be so incompetant. Get over it, and move on. A better question for Hillary is why do you believe it will take you a decade to deliver on Health Care? (By the end of my second term) That's 2016 for gods sake. We need a stronger leader. - Reply to this comment

- Hillary is doing the right thing, owning her vote. That to me is more responsible than just saying, "Oops, I messed up!". We should focus on the Bush admin. that fabricated intelligence, not on Senators who voted based on the "facts" as presented.
