Comments on: Ford: Reasons For Iraq War 'A Big Mistake'
Former President Criticized Bush In Now-Released Interview From 2004
- badaxmofo--don't you realize by now that the Bushites pretty much lynched Rather because Rather was far too close to discovering the truth about Bush's so-called military service--that our President Bushit is a deserter! He was still in the National Guard when he went AWOL to Alabama, then to Massachusetts. Bush is a coward beyond belief, and like most cowards in power, surrounds himself with bullies/thugs (e.g., Cheney), who trashed Rather.

- Keeping quiet is a civil code for Congress, Senate and the Executive Branch. The threat of censorship looms if a public servant holding an elected position, or ex-servant who held one, directs a critique or attack against anyone who is currently serving an elected position. It is easy to become censored and voted into alienation especially during wartime. The Alien and Sedition acts from over 100 years ago set the precidence over treatment of citizens and non-public servants during wartime. The Senate has censored senators - the most notable - Joseph McCarthy in 1954. A political voice whether supportive or dissenting has to be given its time on the political floor to speak. Ford was clearly aware of the tight controls of the Bush Administration. Political Alienation is worse than loosing an election.

- I'm with jeffk1623. Explain shadowsmom5. What are your reasons for supporting shrub, cause I am baffled why anyone would continue to support someone who is leading this country down a path to complete and utter ruin.

- Bush may be the most incompetent president since the Revolutionary War, and even Gerry Ford says so. But look at the bright side--he brings people together--both Rosie and Donald hate Bush's guts!

- "Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked", (wolves in the woods),"and denounce the pacifists for lack of partriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country."

- While most of the known world, liberal or conservative alike, are appalled by the President's policies, the flaming comments about Bush are the opposite of what Ford was all about. All of this talk of prison, murder, etc., is the exact same thing people wanted out of Nixon, Lincoln, Jackson, hell, even Truman and Johnson and Johnson. What good would it do? Nixon saved the country from a hell of a lot by resigning, and Ford pardoned him so that everyone could move on. Frankly, people need to quit whining, which all of this "I want to (Insert own comment) Bush" is, and just get out and vote.

I'm guessing shadow is a pet. - Reply to this comment
- I guess all ex Presidents keep quiet about current presidents, because they are the only ones who know how difficult the job of president is.
What dfference would it have made if Ford had made his views known? Would Rummy or Cheney have listened? I doubt it. They were too caught up in seening themselves as makers of the new middle east and rolling in oil revenues to listen to anyone, even their ex boss. - Reply to this comment
- Uh, he DID give his opinion to the press. The first paragraph says "embargoed" interview, and "Washington Post". Apparently nobody paid attention.
RIP President Ford! - Reply to this comment

- He kept quiet for the same reason a lot of us did! You were instantly deemed unpatriotic and unAmerican if you didn't go along with the lies! You were the scum of the earth if you didn't agree with invading a country who had done nothing to us! If you knew they were lies and said so you were ignored by the Bush supporters who firmly believed every lie he ever told and still do to this day! Bush turned to his "Joe McCarthy" style of politic's and degraded any opposition to his plan! A lot of the current mess can be laid at the American people's doorstep! They were in a war mood and ready to tromp someone, even if it was the wrong country! A lot of us could see the big mistake then! But, it did no good to say it!

- Why didn't he come forward in the beginning? I doubt it would have had any impact, as GW and gang would have turned the smear machine on high gear.
