The Act has also been denounced by critics who assert that its wording makes possible the permanent detention and torture (as defined by the Geneva Conventions) of anyone - including American citizens - based solely on the decision of the President.[20] Indeed, the wording of section 948b[21] of the act appears to explicitly contradict the Third Geneva Convention of which the United States is currently a signatory.

this was posted by Senator Patrick Leahy:
Passing laws that remove the few checks against mistreatment of prisoners will not help us win the battle for the hearts and minds of the generation of young people around the world being recruited by Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. Authorizing indefinite detention of anybody the Government designates, without any proceeding and without any recourse -- is what our worst critics claim the United States would do, not what American values, traditions and our rule of law would have us do. This is not just a bad bill, this is a dangerous bill.

Aeasus I do not hear any voices that are calling for us to give up our rights,I do not read it anyhere. What appears to be a normal conversaton can have subtle meanings.Every time Bin Laden or his right hand man make an audio or video, the cryptologist spend days trying to ascertain if there are hidden meanings in their messages. The current law allows unauthorized surveillance for 72 hours before obtaining a warrant.Everyone knows that have read my post that I am no fan of Bush.Consider that 72 hours is not ample time to determine if someone is simply having a casual conversation or are engaged in sending a covert message.Kim Philby was a famous spy that worked for the M16,M5 in Britain and was secretly a mole for the Russians. It took the British almost 20 years to figure this out, and then Philby dissapeared to only start his career all over again with the Russians.Intel work is not easy and answers are not easyily ascertainable. We have a limited amount of intel that is fluent in Arabic and all of it's sub languages which exacerbates the problems of determing whether you have a casual conversation or a more sinister conversation taking place.Oversight is necessary to prevent abuses and what information that has prevented attacks that can be declassified should be, so that we the American people and congress can make informed positions regarding this matter.

Democrats need to tear up both the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act. Both are bad law and go against the intent of the U.S. Constitution. Don't give up your rights! Don't let them get taken away!

A part of history that should have never been forgotten. The germans prior to the start of and following WW2 used a machine called the enigma machine. At the time it was a highly sophisticated peace of encryption technology. The Polish first discover that the germans were using it (1932) and started to crack it's codes,it was not until 8 years later that the British in conjuction with the Polish devised a machine called the bombe that could actually crack the codes. The germans were fearfull of the code being cracked and changed it constantly. It would take the average cryptologist with two collegues to crack the code again and a minimum of 2 days.Cryptology is far more advance today than it was during WW2 with multiple languages variations.A small example st^b,can anyone decipher it's meaning?Consider that letters are not always what they appear to be and neither are symbols.I am not espousing a viewpoint on the article just stating some of the difficulties.

It must be remembered, and restated, that Dems do not appose wiretapping, just that it happen LEGALLY! It seems this administration finds it too "inconvenient" to obey the law... so they have pretty much just done whatever they want and then use "activist" executive orders and signing statements to just "impose" them as law upon us all. Never mind the little "detail" that they are a violation of our Constitution!!

Alberto Gonzales has saved many children from the brutality and torture of child pornography. He has fought for the children of the world. How can you disrespect this man. He is a hero.

This/these poster/posters, if you notice their posting times, work round-the-clock. indicating more than one participant. The repeated posting have only one or two posible reasons. One, the poster/posters are degenerates who get their kicks from agrivating people.

Or two, They have a bet as to how many responses they can generate from other posters. If the latter is correct there seems to be no time table invloved.

I have to admire CBS's tolerance level but I wonder how long even they can allow this.

One can only hope they get what they deserve for raping our constitution, and putting our brave young men and women in harms way, fighting the wrong war, in the wrong place, based on lies.

Only naive and delusional psychopaths still believe that the Bush administration is competent.

Endless failures are...to them...clever strategies and stunning successes.

Welcome to the "double-speak" world of George Orwell.

George W. Bush, August 2002
"I'm the Commander - see, I don't need to explain. That's the interesting thing about being President. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation."
