Are we out of Iraq yet? I thought the Democrats have this mandate to bring home the troops right now! They aren't even trying. Why? I'm waiting...

Sen. Murtha made a strong showing, and Pelosi is to be commended for standing by the example of his leadership.

However, contrary to Bob Schieffer's analysis, Pelosi showed strong leadership in bowing to the 3-2 margin for Hoyer, even against her stated preferences. No imperial pretensions here, as with the former Rule of Delay.

Nothing political is "fair" but at least the dispute was resolved as it should have been. Dems can consider the peaceful resolution of this matter a triumph for cohesion and a new sense of purpose. Kudos.

pakaal- then pelosi would have set herself up as appearing weak in the eyes of everyone to offer a position she knew was doomed to failure. I am not sure she would accept that risk/reward ratio. It sure makes the dems look divided and disorganized. (Although it is hard to imagine how she could be blindsided with no clue this would happen.)

bushrocks1, here's part of your Government Overview 101 lesson: the Dems don't take charge of House and Senate 'till January 2007. If you don't know that, you've got a lot left to learn....

rsoxfan1123, you said "I don't believe for a minute that she would set herself up for a fall by nominating Murtha if she knew the vote would run this way."

The question for me is whether or not this is considered a "fall" for Pelosi. Personally I'm inclined to think she did this to give Murtha his thanks for bringing Iraq policy to the front - OK, and the fact that apparently she and Hoyer have "history".

The whole Murtha thing was a great talking point for the "Right" side, what with the Abscam scandal and his vote against ethics reform, but in the end the House reps voted almost two to one for Hoyer, so there it is.

I am no Pelosi fan but as I stated before, Murtha was just a sacrificial lamb to keep her support from the SP crowd. Now she can say that she tried and no one can argue. It's all politics.

Or was she simply undercut by her own party? I don't believe for a minute that she would set herself up for a fall by nominating Murtha if she knew the vote would run this way. She was blindsided. Her party ran on the "change" slogan, and voters took that to mean Iraq. While voters may be just right or left of center (I agree with you diverinni), the people voted democrat largely because they want OUT of Iraq. Pelosi knows it and her own party is backpedalling in order to compromise with bush and his cronies.

The Dems have basic control of both houses now. And, for me, that is good. I definitely like the trend. Major changes are still not going to happen and it is not the fault of the Dems. Why? With bush as president, he can veto any dam* bill he wants. We still now have people (the Dems) in major positions of power, and, they definitely represent mainstream American values over the old crew. So it will take a while. Now, if we had a Dem for President. You would see major things happening fast. For now, we must be patient. We've just made a giant step. Hopefully we'll make another in 2008. You will see some good things happen, probably on immigration, minimum wage, worker's rights, anywhere they can get agreement with bush.

Forgive my GROSS misspelling of the word, but if there IS venom in my words, it is well deserved by DUBYA and Co., the most pathetic, corrupt administration in the entire history of this GREAT NATION.

Rafterman1: If a person manages to squirrel away 500K into an IRA, the taxes and penalties on it equate to just over 52% if you withdraw the money before age 59 1/2 under our current tax structure. I, by no means, have that kind of cash socked away but what is my motivation to save? Now you're telling me that the taxes on that money, that I worked for will increase?

It's simple. If I gave you 2 choices, did I really give you a choice if I control BOTH choices? No.

Our News is STILL Propoganda.

We are STILL in ENDLESS WAR.

The Bill of Rights STILL has been swept away.

How is this a Democracy? Fascist Tyranny is written ALL over it.

If this week is an example of the new Democratic
Majority in Congress, that only proves, that the
Democrats made a huge mistake in naming Nancy
Pelosi as Speaker of The US House and Senator
Harebrain Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader!
So what are these braindead Democrats already
trying to do now then? Are they trying to get
theirselves voted right back out in 2008 and just
hand The White House to the next Republican
President? So are all these clowns like Pelosi &
Reid the best the Democrats can do and are Idiot
in Chief George W Bush,*** Cheney & Sen Mitch
McConnell and Trent Lott the Best The GOP can do?

I don't know what your fair share is, how much do you make? If it's under $200,000, you're safe. Time for the rich boys to pay their share while the middle class recovers from having to pay for the bulk of the Iraq war. And, who are you working to support NOW? I'll tell you because under Bush, you still pay taxes and it looks like most your money is going to Iraq to prop them up. Billions to Iraq while most of New Orleans, an AMERICAN city, is still a cr@phole from Katrina.

Well, good start. That is one corrupt arrogant creep out (Murtha). Now if they can just keep it up and get the slimeballs out of office or at least away from where they cannot do much harm.
We voted for change and this is a good start to seeing that we get that change.
Let's stay on top of them. If you know of some pol who is proven corrupt, let us know via the internet. This is a great medium for getting the message out to the people.
Dems or Repubs, corruption does not recognize parties.

The way things are shaping up now,it looks like
the Democratic Party made a huge mistake ever even appointing that braindead loser Nancy Pelosi
as Speaker of the House of Representatives and
Pelosi is hard at work trying to prove they did!
And so, I agree when are we ever going to elect
people, who actually do care about the common good
and common middle class, that is what's left of it! So I have to ask if Nancy Pelosi, and Harry
Reid are the best the Democrats can do? And is
George W Bush,*** Cheney,Mitch McConnell,and
Amnesty John McCain the best the Republicans can
do? I am totally fed up with both parties and all
this insanity and them selling out the American
people! If the Democrats keep *** up like
they already are doing now, then we ,may have to
vote them out again in 2008! So Democrats take
heed the public will not stand for anymore of
this "Business As Usual" out of you or the
Republicans!

My fair share of taxes? Just how much is my fair share? 25%, 30%, perhaps 50%? Fill me in here. Who am I working to support?
