Do folks understand why teachers who get caught in 'relations' with their students are fired? Even if this wasn't illegal (which apparently it is, according to federal child protection laws passed this year by Pres. Bush), it's profoundly unethical and immoral. It's an abuse of power, just as is Hastert, Boehner, Reynolds and Kirkland's coverup. Particularly since this situation involves elected public officials, who are (rightfully) held to higher standards than us regular folk. They did wrong by the American people, and should resign immediately (and yes, applause to Kirkland for already having done so).

Tarquinius2, just this year President Bush (with Mark Foley standing behind him) signed the Adam Walsh Child Protection Safety Act of 2006, making it a federal crime to solicit *** from a minor, defined in that law as anyone under the age of 18. By the definition of federal law cosponsored by Mark Foley himself, it looks like yes, what he did was illegal.

And frankly, even if it wasn't illegal, it was immoral, as was Hastert, Boehner, Reynolds and Kirkland's behavior in trying to cover it up rather than do the right thing.

So much for the apologists of the "Party of Family Values", it seems they reserve all the moral outrage for those of the other party, and when it comes to their own, it's all about spinning it any way they can to make it seem like nothing happened, or that it wasn't illegal, or that it's because Foley's an alcoholic, etc. Talk about lacking a moral compass!

Hey, speak for yourself, lestb35. the vast majority of us men realize (unlike yourself it seems) that hitting on high school kids is usually legally, and always morally, reprehensible. It`s one thing to look at young women (or men in Foley's case) in magazines or whatever, it`s another to go out and hit on high school kids for ***, particularly a whole bunch of them, more particularly when the guy`s over 50, and in a position of power in our Congress, supposed "champion" of protecting children.

You`re saying that if you saw some middle-aged guy cozying up with a schoolgirl you wouldn`t immediately think to yourself "that's sick"? Moreso when the guy's an elected leader? If you don't think so, perhaps you need to check into rehab yourself.

I believe this issue has everything to do with saving children. Foley has claimed sexual abuse of clergy. He carries those scars, and I highly sympathize with him, but the question is why, when he was in a position of power didn't he go out on a limb to stop the cycle of abuse? And why don't others? And why isn't breaking the cycle of neurosis a number one priority for the leaders of our land? Let abusers get nicely punished and throw their victims out to the mental dumping ground. Punish the abusers in Joe Public, Joe Office, and Joe Preacher. Make it a stand on boundaries and a blessing under the law. And don't make victims have to pretend that it's okay anymore. Victims are guiltless.
