Hereby, I will clearly articulate what constitutes treason against the United States of America.
1. Creating and operating secret prisons on American or foreign soil.
2. Illegally abducting and imprisoning foreign or domestic citizens on American or foreign soil.
3. Indefinitely detaining foreign or domestic citizens without charge or representation on American or foreign soil.
4. Torturing foreign or domestic citizens on American or foreign soil.
5. Murdering foreign or domestic citizens on American or foreign soil.
6. Not prosecuting war crimes committed on foreign or American soil by US government officials in the past, and attempting to make them "legal" in the future.
7. Placing American citizens under surveillance without legal warrant.
8. Assuming a foreign or American citizen is guilty until proven innocent, and then never allowing them an opportunity to prove their innocence.

- Our Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said today, "We cannot defeat the Taliban with our military",,, let's see now, lost Iraq now Afaganistan? Bush struck out bottom of the 9th, World Series lost. Way to go Neo-Cons thanks a lot.

- What a mess. Foley likely cost the Republicans the majority. Now we'll have to deal with terrorism back on our soil, immigrants will storm the beaches, taxes will skyrocket, and I'll have to fund probably another "social welfare program". Good going Foley, you f'ing loser!

- There's nothing wrong with compassion, and it's certainly a necessary human trait to forgive, but unfortunately Foley is still in denial. IMs show that despite his lawyer's assurances a few hours ago, Foley did meet up with a congressional Page (in San Diego) and he told another Page they should go to his house to drink alcohol so they don't get into trouble.
Foley is still in denial about his problem, and continues to lie about what he's done. In the end, Foley's story (except for legal problems down the line, perhaps) is done. What he needs to do now is reflect, and hopefully become a healthier individual.
Unfortunately, the Republican leadership is also still in denial about what they did - which was to turn a blind eye to, and indeed to cover up - a situation that has now become impossible to ignore. - Reply to this comment
- I was "not" taken aback by all the usual President Bush bashing here.
What Foley did is inexcusable, I fail to see the connection to the President. You can not get anything on President Bush, so you hang by association, shame on you all.
There must be a full investigation first, to find all who knew about this, when they knew it, and all that did nothing! Then we must demand their resignations or kick them out at the voting polls. That includes the GOP as well as the "DEMS". - Reply to this comment
- Clare, I agree with you compassion is important to consider, however these people are occuping the highest offices in our country & have to be held to the highest standards. Our other options is release all other child preditors & no truly family value person wants that.
Now in our country's leadership we have no one who accepts responsibility for thier actions, they continue to take money from our brave soldiers, conservatives are still blaming Clinton, our Chief Justice tells our judges to decide cases in favor of the President. And 12 perfictly good Americans lost thier lives in Iraq in the 1st 3 days of this month. This, what we are seeing, is the Rise of American Fascism. - Reply to this comment

- I should have saved my comment and sent it to the NY Times because obviously the level of discussion here can't be taken very seriously.

- Looks like these radical republicans (the party of Grant) aren't much diferent than Saddam after all, they all know nothing of honor or truth, & they for sure know little of democracy.

- Our country has an extremely pathetic mental health system, especially by industrialized standards (see how your state made the grade on the National Alliance for Mental Illness website which is www.nami.org). We, the citizens and as a society, are ALL at fault for allowing our children who are victims of sexual abuse, like Mark Foley, to grow up without the treatment that they deserve. While children, they are innocent victims, but when they grow up, they are demonized.
Basic psychology would explain that when victims of abuse grow up, they frequently become perpetual victims or they internalize the abuser and become an abuser themselves. Foley is both a victim and an victimizer. Without question, Foley needs to take responsibility for his actions. However, I'm disappointed in the lack of compassion and how we liberals are so quick to judge Republicans when they, too, are victims of our societal issues. I wish we could remember not to blame the victim - to have some modicum of compassion - despite which party they belong.
