Says President-Elect Pledged To Make Counterinsurgency A Top Priority, Would Increase Assistance To Afghanistan
- "A bold and direct US offer to Ayatollah Khameini, such as proposing that a top US official meet with him in his Teheran office, would put Khameini in a difficult position. It is possible - although not likely - that he would accept, especially if he believes that Iran faces a direct threat from economic failure or Israeli attack, or if he thought that American officials would treat him respectfully and end US pressures on his regime.
"But even if he refused to meet, the United States, having tried to solve the problem through diplomacy at the highest level, would most likely find it easier to reach consensus with its strategic allies to increase sanctions on Iran."
Some in the past have accused WINEP of being a right-wing conservative think-tank, but even if that were true, this article would still show that dialogue with Iran is now becoming a bipartisan decision. This is a welcome change in US foreign policy, the fruits of which can be enjoyed by both the people of the US and the Middle East. - Reply to this comment

I still say the Democrats want no part of this for any reason. - Reply to this comment
- Maybe a lot of Democrats, good and otherwise, will also go down. I hope not and I don''''t like being the bad guy here, but if that does happen - so be it...

My only problem is,...........if Bush IS this bad and has done all these illegal things,.........what is taking so long to bring him, and anyone else that needs to be, to justice?
Either someone do something soon, or I think it''s time to be done with this talk of trials. - Reply to this comment

I''ve thought of that, too. At some point, though, the nonsense has to stop. The issue of course, is terror. Under the Bush/Cheney regieme The United States has become one of the most egregious examples of state sponsered terrorism on the planet. A complete investigation of all that stuff ''n'' nonsense should uncover sufficient evidence to prove complicity in such by our high elected officials no matter how much documentation gets shredded. Maybe a lot of Democrats, good and otherwise, will also go down. I hope not and I don''t like being the bad guy here, but if that does happen - so be it...

I''m willing. The Democrats are NOT angels, we all know that. Other than acting more pragmatically and being less enslaved to an ideology that is intrinsically as filthy as a dirt road, there is little to tell. Obama, though, does obviously represent a lesser evil...
Therefore, to avoid the ugly scenario you so wisely point out, Dems will have to conduct their business with such exacting integrity as to betray no doubt whatsoever that any such witch hunts and "show trials" as will inevitably come to the fore if/when the GOP ascends will be shown to be exactly what they are...Utter and complete B.S. - Reply to this comment

Ah yes, the calls for political show trials begin. And when the Republicans get back in power (and they will) it will trigger a new round of show trials of their political enemies.
Lovely.

We are less than a decade removed from impeaching a president and nearly relieving him of office because of a lie in a civil deposition about ********. Yet when congressman Dennis Kucinich recently attempted to impeach Bush over torture, extraordinary rendition and other grotesque constitutional abuses, Kucinich''''s embarrassed fellow Democrats couldn''''t kill the measure quickly enough.
Why? Top Democrats are so complicit in what has happened since 9/11 that my guess is they dare not travel down that road. From voting in favor of the war in Iraq to holding the telecommunications companies guiltless for their role in spying on Americans (Barack Obama infuriated much of his progressive base by voting for immunity), the Democrats have often acted more as enablers than as a true opposition party. From their point of view, no doubt it''''s best to move on. - Reply to this comment
- I don''t like to say this but IF Obama is really committed to eliminating terrorism, he could do worse than to initiate a thorough investigation of the wrong doing of the Bush-Cheney axis over the last two terms. If there is sufficient evidence of criminal activity (I KNOW there is, but knowing isn''t PROVING) to secure conviction, then try any and all involved and see to it harsh sentences are issued to all who are found guilty.
We must demonstrate to the world we will never again tolerate the malefeasance of the last 8 years. - Reply to this comment

- Obama must destroy these terrorists! It is a must! Obama is focusing on the economy big time and nobody can''t dispute this fact with him appointing top people to his handle the economic crisis. As a black woman, seeing Al-queda''s video calling Obama a house negro really set me off! I can''t wait till Obama take all of these fools out! They must pay for what they did on 9/11. To ingore that fact is just plain stupid.
