Switching Sides: Inside The Enemy Camp
But then in 2000, well before his arrest, something happened which would make Abas question everything he believed in: a fatwa, a religious edict, was issued by Osama bin Laden.
"It should be understood that killing Americans and Jews anywhere found are the highest act of worship and the highest form of good deeds in the eyes of Allah," Simon quotes bin Laden.
Abas and his fellow commanders were ordered to read the fatwa to their men and make sure they carried it out. The others obeyed, but Abas refused. It was his moment of truth. He firmly believed that jihad was to be fought only on the battlefield in defense of Islam; he had always been taught that the killing of civilians had nothing to do with holy war and that it was forbidden.
The fatwa justified killing non-Muslim civilians everywhere.

- again;
Further evidence of the left not understanding what is happening...
some of the comments border on silly...
there have been a number of plots stopped over the last year...
The aggressiveness with the pursuit of some of these plots has been interesting...and surprising....to say that Chertoff has done nothing or needs to do nothing reveals that some don't comprehend the risk (they are probably the same group that says Bush as responsible for 9/11)...
I guess the repuation of the blogging world is ratified with aome of the comments I read ...on this topic.. - Reply to this comment
- "We've gotta protect our phoney-baloney jobs, gentlemen, we must do something about this immediately!" Governor William J. LePetomane (Mel Brooks) in Blazing Saddles.
Chertoff knows that the American people are starting to question why we need to spend billions on his department, when nothing ever happens, so he starts making up potential terrorist attacks to scare everyone back onside. - Reply to this comment
- These Bushies and of course Bush himself are sociopaths - thinking that since they are in these positions of power and making these huge decisions they must be great. Narcisism grows to sociopathy.
And they have a year and half left yet the dems don't seem to be doing anything. They won't take a stand - talking in those cattered soft voices like they're talking to their grandchildren. Stand up and be heard dems and don't allow Bush to push you around. Cripe! - Reply to this comment

The report appears to be bureacratic CYA. Look at the evidence: Zarwhari (Al Quada # 2) predicted the recent attacks in London and Glasgow and hinted at the modus operandi ("those that cure you will kill you"). A comment that refers to the fact that the operations were carried out by medical doctors.
C'mon, these attacks were pathetic. They relied on untrained dummies to conduct inconsequential attacks against targets that mean nothing. If this is the best they can do, AQ is reeling from the global efforts to quash them and apparently losing capability each month and year that passes.
There is no doubt that they'll continue trying, but based on their continued inability to mount any significant (strategic) attacks against the US, Chertoff's comments have to be aimed more at keeping the US public on a mental alert state.
For interesting reading about AQ v. US in Iraq, read Michael Yon's columns.- Reply to this comment

- Why all of sudden do we have Chertoff babbling terror stuff, is he telling us something in advance or did Cheney tell him to stir the pot. And this picture here makes him look like the Grim Reaper, fitting I guess.

- Some interesting comments..especially from the left side of the house.
1. Whenever the Bush adm attempts to fight these people aggressively...the left screams that we are being too rogu (Rendition)
2. Whenever ee attempt to use the tools available..(electronic measures...the left screams we are violating the rights of Al Queda)..
3. The left has attempted to hamstring the U.S. in our efforts against Al_Qaeda..
Now the left is complaining that we have not been aggressive enough...It's apparent the left( and most people) don't appreciate the issues involved..
Does the left recomment we go into pakistan to attempt to find these people?
if so, are you prepared for the ramifications of Musharref being toppled?...do you understand those ramifications?... - Reply to this comment
- Let's get our troops out of effing Iraq and back home to attend to this real threat against our national security.
The US and the "Coalition" (such as it is) should stay in Afghanistan and other areas of the world where we know there are real terrorism threats. - Reply to this comment
- It bothers me when they use the term "homeland"...why don't they say AMERICA? "homeland" has something of a sinister ring to it...

Hitler had already grabbed "the fatherland" and Stalin "the Motherland", what's a poor unimaginative fascist dictator like Bush to do? - Reply to this comment
- This is fodder for the Democratic Party. The White House and GOP claim to be hardliners on terrorism, yet have failed to even hamper the group who originally attacked us. Now Al Qaeda is stronger than before.
We need to wake up and realize that those in charge fumbled the ball when we let most of Al Qaeda excape through Northwestern Pakistan. Of all things we should have secured our interests against those who attacked the trade center and pentagon before launching an ill concieved mission in iraq.
I would personally like to thank Bush for destroying all credibility of the GOP. I never liked the guy but the more I think on this, what I come up with is hes really a Democrat and would like to see the Republican party fail as a whole so he launched a whole series of blunders to dismantle to party who claims they are in line with the majority of america. THANK U MR. PRESIDENT we don't have to worry about the GOP for the foreseeable future. - Reply to this comment
- So, Al-Quida is strong as ever!! And whose fault is that?? Could it be that the invasion of Iraq by US forces made enemies where there no enemies before???
Bush has created an environment where the US is safe than ever. We are dispised in the middle east and homeland secutity IS A JOKE.
His gut feeling is because HE KNOWS HOW VUNERABLE WE ARE. He just wants to try and cover his a.s.s.!
What a completely stupid statement. Another Bush appointee who is UNQUALIFIED FOR THE JOB. - Reply to this comment
- I read these anti-Bush, anti-Administration posts daily. Why don't we start sending these things to our congressional delegates? It's time to wake everyone up to the garbage this country has been fed for the past seven years. Things are not going to change until Bush is gone. He's setting things up for the next (Democratic) Administration to fail. Mark my words, Karl (the Devil himself) Rove will be working behind the scenes to place (Jeb Bush) the next puppet regime in the White House. If that happens, we Americans will have nobody to blame but ourselves.
