The cornerstone of U.S. policy was the Domino Theory. This argued that if South Vietnam fell to communist forces, then all of South East Asia would follow. Popularized by the Eisenhower administration[23], some argued that if communism spread unchecked, it would reach Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States. It was better, therefore, to fight communism in Asia, rather than on American soil. Thus, the Domino Theory provided a powerful motive for the American creation of a client state in southern Vietnam.[24] The theory underpinned American policy in Vietnam for five presidencies.[25]

Radiob - You bring back some almost forgotten memories. The domino theory seemed very logical at the time. With the cold war and Russia and China posing military threats, this theory made sense. Like many other theories, this one did not come to pass. Today, it would be difficult for most younger people to understand the threats and tensions felt by many Americans. Some of us remember television commercials for bomb shelters for our yards and basements.

J, I have a hard time believing that anyone who survived Viet Nam would speak so of another who served in that boondoggle, regardless of politics.

I may be wrong here, but I know that I would never slam a brother survivor regardless of his politics, because I know what he's endured.

I can't speak for others, but combat did not make me believe in fairy tales.

It did, however, instill in me the belief that no man should be asked to lay down his life for anything less than a valid reason.

Nixon had decided in 1972 that we would no longer support Vietnamization.

You also fail to mention that the great majority of Americans wanted no more of the Viet Nam boondoggle and choose rather to blame the Congress for listening to it's constituency, as it should.

In 1971, 61% of the American people wanted us out of Viet Nam.
