I agree with Mr. Harkin, this was an attempt to help the middle class and curry political favor on the part of the democrats. It was an attempt to curry political favor and lay the ground work for the dismantling of social security on the part of the republicans. The democrats heart was in the right place with their head you know where. The head of the republican's hasn't been removed from there since Barry Goldwater died.

They won't come right out and attack it directly, but rather start knocking pieces out of it's foundation first. That way makes it harder to actually hold anyone accountable.
They should immediately raise the Social Security ceiling so that everyone pays the same percentage no matter how much they make. End of problem forever. If those rich scammers don't like it they cab get the hell out now.
Why would you tax 2 million people while giving breaks to 160 million. Simple 160 million votes beats 2 million votes. If the Repuglican party had the brains of Lincoln they would not have cut taxes while going into two wars. Lincoln raised taxes to pay for his war. He was a genius which is sorely lacking into today's Repuglican party and Obama is nothing more than a closet Repuglican pandering to the masses.
I think it just might have something to do with the fact that those 160M have more need to use that money to pay their basic household bills than do the 2M. THINK! I DO agree with your points re war & taxes, however.
We should permanently pass this tax cut. All the lines Obama gave to argue against letting this expire, and thus hitting working Americans with a tax increase, are just as sound today as they will be tomorrow and the day after. No tax increase today or ever, make the payroll tax cut permanent.

Why shouldn't federal employees get benefit cuts? They make more money than most of us and everybody knows federal employees have a very generous benefit package! I would assume this means Congress and Senate too, and how many millionaires are there? Yea! Stick it Steny Hoyer! You have no sympathy from me! I don't even make median wage in this country and have some college!
And Tom Harkins, If you are so worried about ss, help pass a law to let good aliens become citizens so they can pay taxes too! There is an estimated 10 million illegals in this country. If we kept even half of them and let them become citizens then they could pay taxes on their jobs like the rest of us! 5 million new taxpayers in the system would certainly help raise revenue to lower the deficit and replenish SS, ya think?
