Bill Gates and Tony Soprano have something in common. They're both "involved" in waste management http://www.billionairechronicles.net/what-can-a-billionaire-buy/like-tony-soprano-bill-gates-invests-in-trash
Gates, notoriously skin-flinted, only became a philanthropist after his wife got hold of him and his money. Alterman conveniently ignores that fact in order to exhalt his own vanity.
Gates instituted a generous options program at Microsoft long before most companies did such a thing. He made millionaires at of janitors and secretaries.
Nice job of cherry picking a dead man's legacy to cast aspersions on his character. After all, what can Jobs say in defense? nothing. Fact is, this professor knows nothing about his giving, because unlike the very public giving of Bill Gates, Steve was a very private person. And the professor seems not to know much about FoxConn and all the companies that used it and their reasons for doing so. But it raises the question, what about this professor's giving habits? And what has he contributed to a better world? Does he teach his students to sit in judgement, jump to conclusions, and substitute opinion for facts? I'll take Steve over Bill, thank you. Steve created, challenged, and changed the world. Bill's buggy OS, ripped off from Steve's company, has held the world back and empowered legions of scoundrels to interfere through hacking and malicious code. I think Bill is admirable for his post MS giving. I think Steve is admirable too. This false dichotomy, of choosing one "over " the other is distasteful and, frankly, speaks poorly of this author.
Enlighten me: what possible "reasons" justify using Foxconn? You're correct that we don't know whether Jobs was a secret Santa, using his vast wealth in ways all citizens of good will would value. I'm sorry he was so ill; I'm sorry he's dead. But his Foxconn-based business plan -- and his advice to Obama -- make the incredible gushing over his death pretty revolting....
What did Steve create? All his products were designed by people under him. He pilfered in the 80's from HP and Bell Labs. The one thing that was nearly solely his idea was NeXT, which was a colossal failure. Look up on google who designed the iPod, Macbook, iPhone, etc. Steve took credit for a work of a lot of overworked, marginalized and poorly treated, yet brilliant, engineers and designers.
I am always amazed how someone's death suddenly propells them to sainthood. So many people who sneared at Apple products quickly jumped in line to buy the latest and greatest rendition of some form of Apple technology. When these "wonderful" icons of industry utilize American labor to produce American products then maybe we can laud their largesse. Until then, they rank alongside the "Robber Barons" of the industrial age who pilaged the workforce to ensure their own family's fortune for generations.
The person that wrote the article uses an ipod to hear his music and uses a Apple laptop computer..I won't use Apple items..They look nice..I don't like Apple. I am not impressed by them. Mr Jobs lest so. I use Windows based PCs. I would NOT take an Apple computer if one was given me. No thanks. I am appalled over the prison like work force the writer talks about. It reminds me of the children that were chained to their jobs in in America. The garment making and other labours. It is wrong to enslave the poor in China or any nation. I would hope that the computers I use are not made by slave labour workers. I use Dell and HP. As for OS I have used XP home from 06 to 08. Vista from 08 on. My roommate uses win7. I have priced Apple and the software to run their machines--too costly. I just don't like Apple..The Apple users they put on the air that they are better than us windows users. I am sorry Mr Jobs passed of cancer. I have used an Apple machine when my roommate had one..We both hated it. He gave it to a friend that needed it. I did not want it. The apps/games I play use Windows plus MS Word. Bill Gates of Seattle wins over Steve Jobs. I have heard both talk on TV.Going by the voice of both. Bill Gates is kind .Steve Jobs well is not. Apple users have told me their machines are better for us legally blind- no they are not..Windows is better in some ways. It has always been a war over Apple vs PC or Apple vs MS. I am 57.
Bill Gates has made lousy products for so long, people wouldn't know a good product from them, if it stared them in the face.
Gates has kept ITS departments well staffed, solving all the problems, with their swiss cheese software, that is totally flakey, and full of security issues.
I have used an Apple..I hated it. I right click alot. Apple great for them that have money to burn. Ye talk about security..Ye know yer suppose use a firewall and anti virus on yer machines. Macs need ANTI VIRUS software. That is right. I keep Vista and McAfee on Notebook and Norton on home PCs up to date. My old Notebook has both Vista and ubuntu..I use Vista. I have apps that are windows based. They will not work in Ubuntu. Ye use what ye have learnt.
I believe that God gifts some people with the ability to create wealth but not merely for the purpose of accumulation. I think He intends that wealth to be used to further His purposes, which include helping the poor. I don't think God ever intends for us to create wealth by exploiting people in the way that you describe Mr. Jobs did.
I, too, will take Bill Gates over Steve Jobs any day. Thanks for the excellent editorial.
What about the other companies that use the same FoxConn production facilities? Don't they have any say in the conditions?
MS only makes software, the hardware providers for MS products use the same low wage foreign labor as Apple. The fact that Apple provides end-to-end design and development of their hardware and software only provides for a better end user experience.
When this web-author is willing to point out all the other hardware companies that use FoxConn and admit that Apple isn't the only company with the issues that he raises, I'll believe that the coverage is 'balanced'.

You idiot. So if a woman or child is being raped in the middle of the street and no one seems to be calling the police, then it's OK to let the crime continue ??
Myself, I prefer real news stories when I come to a "news" site, not endless ramblings about rich overrated computer nerds. Steve "Blow" Jobs has been dead for well over a month, I think its time that the stories about him die too.
