Guest Column: The Drug Policy Alliance's Founder On Why Marijuana Should Never Have Been Made Illegal In The First Place
- talcoolone, just because you chose to abuse marajuana, doesn't mean that everyone else will, or that decriminalization will cause more people to become addicted abusers. There's a big difference between responsible recreational use and abuse.
Some people choose to abuse alcohol, and would continue to do so even if it were illegal. Would you want to have to buy your beer from a criminal because the government says you can't buy it legally at the store? - Reply to this comment
- Element 51, you are wrong in your assumption. Alcohol, weed, any kind of mind altering drug is a lie. I am thankful to have left it all behind. I'm sorry for your loss. The person (drunk driver) could just have easily been impaired by marijuana. It seems to be a popular opinion on this board that alcohol is somehow worse than weed. I disagree. It's all a lie.

- I don't see why it isn't made legal. Like the story staid, it's the safest of all past-times, and the governenment and states would benefit so much from the extra billions of dollars it would bring in.
I've been smoking marijuana casually for the past 10 years and never had a problem. I had a hard time befall me and I (unfortunately) starting drinking constantly for 8 months. In those eight months my life was turned upside down. Not to mention the worst came when I stopped drinking. I had the shaking, sweating, irratibility...and it brought me and my girlfriend and family farther apart.
The only thing that calmed me down and got rid of the irratibility, was marijuana. Keeping in mind I was on quite a few anti-depressants to try and get rid of the symtoms, and nothing even came close. - Reply to this comment
- talcoolone.......I'm assuming that by your screen name you have a beer or two now and then. It's ok because it doesn't take over your life. However, a few years ago I lost my sister when she way hit head on by a drunk driver doing over 70 miles per hour. He's out of jail now and back with his family but guess what........she's still dead. I'm sorry you had a problem with weed.....you be sure and stand your ground against weed and I hope you can handle your booze.

- To those of you who are looking to President Obama to help legalize......There is no way he can. Right now the republicans are on him for everything he tries to do and they have declared that they won't stop till he fails. Quote from Rush Limbaugh. If he even speaks in favor of legalization they will crusify him. The only way to do it is to get it passed through the Senate and House, submit it to the President, have him veto it and send it back to the Senate and House for their passage. That way he will not be attacked by the Radical Right.. Actually he already is accused even though there is not a speck of evidence that he uses any illegal substance. Remember that the right wing has vowed to destroy him and will stop at nothing to do it. Yet they hang on to every word that Limbaugh speaks and he is a convicted drug abuser.

- Politicians by nature are gutless! If there were true leadership, in any state or at the Federal level, marijuana would have long ago been decriminalized.
Maybe we need a million pot smoker march on Washington, all lit up, to drive home the point!
Absurd and destructive laws should not be allowed to stand. - Reply to this comment
- I used to smoke herb all the time. I enjoyed it immensely. I'm glad I quit. It became the center of my attention, what I lived for. It made me feel that I was ok. It was about the only thing I knew that made me truly happy. The only problem with it was that it was a lie. It gave me the reward without having to work for it. I got it the easy way, I got it for free. I neglected the rest of my life, my wife, my job, my kids, just to be able to avoid the normal pain of life. The experiences that you learn from, the ones that make you an adult. That's what marijuana is, it's a lie. Legalize it? I hope not.

- Whether or not I or anyone else consume marijuana should be none of the government?s business-so long as I?m not behind the wheel of a car or otherwise putting others at risk. It?s time to get the government off my property and out of both my pockets and my body when it comes to marijuana. Enough is enough.
Well said! Like an American with a spine!! - Reply to this comment
