Comments on: Why Vermont's Marriage Equality Matters
The Nation: Vermont Isn't The First State To Legalize Gay Marriage, But It's The First To Do It Through Its Legislature
- tturner-----If you want to believe your fairy tales, fine, but do not use them as an excuse to be homophobic.
No one has died and then come back to say what is after death(not even jesus) so live your life in speculation and let others live theirs in reality. - Reply to this comment
- tturner: i did not acknowledge that there is a god, much less that the bible is his/her/its word. and, putting something in CAPS does give it any more credibilibilty. if you need a savior, feel free to believe. to me, it sounds like slavery

- honestabe8, GOD's intention is for man to interpret the literal meaning of the BIBLE and live by it's words. That would be as true today as it was in the beginning. The very fact that you acknowledge there is a BIBLE and that it is the word of GOD gives legitimacy to the writings in it. All anyone need to do is read it for themselves to see how relevant it is and can be in todays society. Just because man has created his own religion of secular humanism will not change the facts. We are born and then we die, but what we do in between is our choice. It is GOD's choice what happens to us once we have died, who do you know right now will be here 100 years from now. GOD's word was here long before secular humanism and will be here long after it's phase is over. Simply start with the book of John in the new testament and read it through then come back and tell me that HIS word is no longer relevant. Because then you can speak from your own experience and not go by what the secular humanists have brain washed you about.
The celebration of Easter is to honor Christ's death, burial, and reserection. It is this act that gives us who believe in HIM, victory over death. Because GOD has appointed man once to die and then eternity with him in heaven for the believer. He sent his only begotten son into the world not to condemn it but to give everlasting life to them who believe in HIM. It is any man's choice to accept or reject this gift, but GOD is just and every man will be judged according to HIS word, the bible. - Reply to this comment
- When people tried to stone the adulterous woman, Jesus stopped them. Laws are not intended to be the punishment for sin - even if you are arrogant enough to be so absolutely certain you know what God considers a sin as to make it a law even for those of other beliefs - that is for God to do, not you.
Let them marry. If you're right, then it's for God to deal with. If you are wrong, making laws to prevent them from your own shallow human perspective was a grave mistake. - Reply to this comment
- Keep god out of this discussion. Not all of us,let alone a secular government, share your religiously inspired arguments.

- irishboy167: in order for being gay to be "wrong", it would have to be a choice, no? if you feel that sexual orientation is a choice, at what age did you make yours?

- Way to go Vermont!! Liberty, equality, and justice are the American way. Marriage equality laws for all is just the next step and it is not coming soon enough. Anyone not believing in liberty, equality and justice for all certainly do not embrace the American values our country was founded upon. Way to go Vermont, way to go!!

- tturner: it seems awfully pompous of you interpreting the "intentions of the creator". nothing quite like basing 21st century morals and ethics based on a collection of books written by broze age sheepherders. this is not about "god". this is about whether gay people are treated equally by a secular government. i do not believe the government has any business being involved in "marriage", but if you need a license to get married, they should not discriminate based on (some) citizens religious views. the ideal solution would be to have "domestic union" contracts to couples (either same gender or different gender), which stipulates the rights and responsibilites of the couple. that would be the limit of the government involvement. if a church wants to "bless" the union (or not), that would be their business, not that of the government.

I remember back in the '60's when bigots tried to justify discrimination on the basis that it was "wrong" to discintinue doing so.
Discrimination is never "right". - Reply to this comment
- We must remove the log from our own eye before we attempt to remove it from others. This would be true for anyone no matter what side of the issue we are on. But, no man or government can change the facts. The anatomy of a man is designed by God to lie with the anatomy of the woman, that's the way the sexual parts are designed. And it should be when married not as adulterers. Adultery of any kind is clearly a sin and detestable to GOD as any other sin would be. But GOD also gave us a way out of our sins and we celebrate HIM this Easter Sunday. So be silent and listen, the LORD is drawing you near, HE wishes no one to perish. Get on your knees and repeat after me: LORD I hear you calling and I know that I am a sinner as you say that I am and am in need of salvation through you. Thank you for bearing my sins on the cross so that I may have eternal life in GLORY with you when I die. Now go tell your family and friends of your commitment and find other like minded believers to fellowship with through a bible teaching church. GOD Bless you and I will see you at the gates of heaven.

- Lots of bigotry and hate around these days. People try to justify it by saying it isn't bigotry and it isn't hate... "oh look how disgusting this is!", as if their personal dislike was some sort of automatic qualifier for supernatural damnation.
They forget (or wish to obscure) that being g.ay isn't about s.ex. It isn't about labels or religion or politics or laws. It's about who you are capable of loving, body and soul, and being loved by in return. It defines a culture that has existed as long as mankind itself has existed.
Some people really hate g.ay and lesbian people. I can't say for sure why. Is it because we're not 100% like them? Is it because we may not share their religion? Is it because they don't personally share the same feelings? I don't know. But it is because of that hatred, exemplified in posts here, a g.ay man or woman might get shot, robbed, beaten or staked out on a fence in Wyoming and left to die. That's what it means to hate.
Most g.ay and lesbian people have the courage to stand up to that hate, and we do. Some give into it, and begin to hate themselves. All I know is that I know who I love, and why, and there isn't enough hatred, bigotry, rhetoric or ignorance in all the world to change that.
As time passes, civil rights are being recognized for g.ay and lesbian people, and many of the old bigotries tend to fade. But there will always be a few, like some who post here, that will seek to destroy instead of understand. - Reply to this comment
- Lord, than You for striking another blow for justice for all off Your creations. We are slowly coming around to putting into action Your love. And please forgive the haters for they know not what they do.

- The gradual acceptance of homosexuality is insidious. Initially, the adjective ?gay? was transformed into a noun to that describes a homosexual man displaying effeminate mannerisms. It seemed to fit and it lost some of its negative connotation.
By definition heterosexuals are attracted to the opposite sex. In restrooms, dorm rooms, and military barracks, it?s a simple process to separate facilities to maintain the needed level of decorum and comfort between the sexes. However, homosexuals make chaos out of this convention as separation, decorum and comfort disappear when it is not just opposites that attract.
The homosexual community is aware of the confusion and conflict they create for themselves and others. Furthermore they loose the prestige of a family legacy, are subject to increased suicide rates, learn that many parents do not want their children influenced by them, and tragically they die far too soon as a result of their homosexual activities. It is reportedly more lethal than smoking cigarettes and should not be considered a victimless behavior.

Surprisingly, there is virtually no mention from the main stream media that confirms or refutes the homosexual lifespan issue.
Homosexual apologetics say that their orientation is genetically or culturally influenced. Similarly, those with substance abuse, criminal, and heterosexual illicit tenancies can make similar claims, although the financial, cultural and spiritual outcomes are commonly destructive.
In addition to the pragmatic reasons to oppose homosexuality, Judeo-Christians don?t mix words, clearly condemning this lifestyle on Biblical grounds:
Leviticus 18:22
?Do not practice homosexuality; it is a detestable sin.?
And for raising children: Luke 17:2
?It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.?

- God's word has stood since the beginning of time which was also created by HIM. In the beginning HE created man and then woman, not another man. The homosexual argument does not change the intentions of the creator. For all have sinned, not just homosexuals, and fall short of the Glory of GOD. But, John 3:16 says: GOD so LOVED the world that he gave his only begotten son (Jesus Christ) that whoever would believe in HIM (Jesus Christ) would not perish but have everlasting life. No secular human, government, or sinful world can alter the purpose of the creator and his intentions for the human race. Although he does give us a free will to choose our ways even if the ways we choose may be wrong HE still LOVES us and wishes none to perish, but as HE says in HIS word he will judge the wicked. I find it quit amazing that the secular humanist has twisted the facts around in order to suit their purposes in an attempt to justify their sins. Easter and Christmas have been celebrated for centuries and that will continue long after we are gone. No matter what you feel right now toward GOD he still LOVES you and will forgive you if you call name of Jesus and put your Faith and Trust in HIM. Have a blessed Easter Sunday.

- Being gay is wrong and gays marrying is wrong. Marriage is reserved to be between a man and a woman. Period. If we're going to teach our children wrong is right, then lets just legalize every unholy act and become a pagan society. I can guarantee you then that a bunch of political educated idiots won't be stealing from us, educated gay lawyers won't be able to forcibly teach our kids that immorality is right, and the drug trade will stop since the regular joe on the street won't feel held back by the legal system, hoping the police will do something while our children get hook on this garbage.

Like that woman with the mad chimp...Yikes!
A study on short-term same-sex marriages in Norway and Sweden found that divorce rates were higher in same-sex marriages than in opposite-sex marriages, and that unions of lesbians are considerably less stable, or more dynamic, than unions of gay men.[2] The authors cited that this may be due to same-sex couples "non- involvement in joint parenthood", "lower exposure to normative pressure about the necessity of life-long unions" as well as differing motivations for getting married. - Reply to this comment
- The republican party is no longer the party I grew up with... they're a parody of real life... posing like they're on camera at all times (much like the rest of America because they think this is all a reality show we're doing here). Rush and the rest of these subversives are in for a rude awakening, I think... they're desperate to hang on to the evil niche they've created, but it will fade away as their uselessness becomes more and more apparent to the right wing kool-aid drinkers as their words are proven false again and again as we've witnessed so many times in the past 8 years. Please, the Dems are mad as hatters, the Libertarians are even more delusional, and my only road back to sanity is to kick republican a$$ into line and get back to the middle where the rest of the country is... what's wrong with you fuggin people? You blew it, admit it, and change your ways to something a little bit more popular whether you mean it or not... it beats the poop out of the circular firing squad you're competing in. Give Americans something to believe in rather than fear... we've had all the orange alert wolves we can handle. Offer hope and a way out rather than the path back into the same old wilderness. You guys just don't fuggin get it, do ya?

- --Rep. Jason Lorber, a Democrat from Burlington, told his colleagues on the floor that he "shouldn't have to ask my coworkers for the right to marry the person that I love."--
That's what I hate about gay people -- they are so uppity. You have to ask for the right to marry, bozo, because it is a non-traditional marriage. Those who seek other kinds of non-traditional marriages -- e.g., plural marriages -- can't even ask.
I am in favor of civil unions, but I don't see why straight people should give a damn whether gays can marry or not. Darn bleeding-heart liberals. - Reply to this comment
