The Weekly Standard: MoveOn.org's Outrageous New Ad Plays On Heartstrings To Hide A Message Of Selfishness
- "Hey--Alex! Don''t worry, dude. I won''t be hopping the next pram to Canada if my guy isn''t elected ''cause, you know, it''s not all about me."
This is a picture difficult to imagine of the Republican we all have come to know by deed and words: It''s all about his beliefs, his values, his morals, his money, his race, his gender. - Reply to this comment
- "If the majority of Americans decide the country''s destiny is best directed by Sen. John McCain in 2008, then military personnel obey him as commander-in-chief. But they pledge to do so as part of their primary commitment to the rights embodied in the Constitution--our right to select the commander-in-chief being one of them."
Is this the same Constitution that Bush said was nothing but a f**king piece of paper he berated his national security staff not to throw at him? - Reply to this comment
- So, when can we start those "peaceful base operations such as those we have in other parts of the world?" How about tomorrow? This dangerous occupation/war/anti-insurgency has already gone on too long. I guess that kid ought to be home-schooled by a mother who does not want McCain for a president.

- Typical Obama twisting of words and misrepresentation. This habitual and ingrained deception is what we can expect if he''''s elected.

Who gave us swiftboat? Who lied 500 times about Iraq? Valerie Plame? Global warming? How about more drilling to bring down the price of oil? The tax cuts that would benefit every American but turned out to be a giveaway for the rich? ''Ingrained deception'' is good for starters to describe the presidency of George Bush and by complicity the Republican party that delivered it to the American people. - Reply to this comment

- It is ruly ironic that this message of selfishness comes from the "free the rich from taxes" neocon Weekly Standard.
The message of the commercial is that a mother wants to keep her child from serving and possibly dying in an unnecessary occupation 20 years from now and she should be ashamed for doing so. Another part of the consistent message coming fromm the Weekly Standard has been that it is not selfish, but is somehow honorable, to constantly give the rich new tax breaks, because the truly rich are truly suffering under their current tax burden. - Reply to this comment
- The US government has borrowed on behalf of every family in America, $18,000 to date and growing.
So if you are a supporter of George Bush, a supporter of this war, I demand that you pay your share upfront as we go. I demand you cut a check right now to the IRS for $18,000

Right and if you want a place to lay the blame for the high cost of oil. It can be placed at the feet of George Bush, due to his funding a war/occupation by printing money, not demanding any sacrifice of anyone who could actually afford it. Now the sacrifice belongs to the middle and working classes as the value of their earnings/savings are being eroded.
This is a kind of tax increase that McCain evidently intends to continue. His plan to provide huge tax cuts to the rich will again cause this miserable war and occupation to be funded by printing money. This causes the value of the dollar to decline and increases the cost of imported oil to everyone. Another 4 years of this and the citizens of the United States will be well on their way to 3rd world status. - Reply to this comment
- what a crock!
Bush and his boy, McBushCain, started this war just as
surly as they lost this war.
to continue to defend a losing military action is
criminal, to start immoral, unjust wars, to invade defensel;ess countries to improve your own re-election chances is criminal and immoral.
these clown now want to start world war three with the attacks on Iran.
All of you mindless conservatives that vote republicon without a thought every time you can,
YOU

- My last comment about this article...
This article is an abomination to mothers around the world. The sentiments expressed in this article labeling motherly love selfish is dangerous and unheard of in this new century. Libby Sternberg has an arrogance and rhetoric I have not read anywhere except in history books in the most shameful periods of humanity.
From the author''s name which I could assume Jewish (possibly incorrectly) the idea of taking up such a perversion of patriotism and motherly love is even more disturbing. That CBS would publish her article is surprising.
If Libby Sternberg''s article was meant to inflame the readers, at least with me she has succeeded. - Reply to this comment
- But there are probably many military mothers who fret about what a Commander-in-Chief Obama might ask their sons and daughters to do. "President Obama, you can''t have them," isn''t a responsible answer to any orders he might give.
You know it is obvious Libby that you don''t understand or accept the needless loss of American life in the Iraq war. We should not have went there, we should not be there now and we should not be there in the future. If we are there, our children will be killed there. John McCain thinks its ok for us to stay there for 100 years and he also thinks it is unimportant when the troops come home. His words. THAT is what this commercial is about.
Obama will get our troops out of Iraq. That is the difference that you obviously cannot see.
My children are in the military. They want to serve their country. They DON''T want to serve the interests of George Bush''s/*** Cheney''s war profiteering buddies. - Reply to this comment

- To the author of this article:
What on earth does the God forsaken war in Iraq have to do with defending the constitution? And in case you haven''t noticed, George W. Bush has NO RESPECT for the constitution.
And by the way- for those of you trashing Moveon.org, it was formed in response to the fact that the Republicans felt the need to impeach an American president for being evasive about his heavy petting. They were telling the congress to MOVE ON! Now, they want to move on from this ridiculous war. - Reply to this comment
- I do. Moveon.org is a disgusting organization with a selfish and disgusting message. They are anti american in my opinion and it is too bad all its members are just like the mother in this ad.

- Does anyone have any RATIONAL comments to make here?
Anyone?
Posted by txgrouch2006 at 12:05 AM
There have been a lot of rational comments here - mine, Brianbwb, kennedy7955, bluestardad, others.
Your problem is that you don''t understand the meaning of the word "rational". To you, anyone you personally disagree with is "irrational". That is not what the words means at all. But that''s not surprising, since you''re Republican and they''ve distorted quite a bit over the past 8 years. - Reply to this comment
- "It should be clear by now that Sen. McCain''s "100 years" comment referred to peaceful base operations..." by Libby Sternberg.
The comments can be taken as they were said, literally. That seems all to clear to me. - Reply to this comment

- "The USA is stealing oil from Iraq."
That would be the best news we have gotten from the war from the very beginning. If only it was true. George Bush is too stupid to pull that off. - Reply to this comment

Hey Scottyusa, Mr. Pro-war. I hope you have your checkbook ready to write a check for $18,000 for your share of the war. Good news for you, if McCain wins the election your kids will have plenty of time to fight this war. Because if McCain gets his way - this war will still be going by the time your kids hit 18.
Then if your kid(s) lose a limb or their lives in this war you can wrap them up in the Flag. That will make you a patriotic father huh? Then ask yourself what it was all for? To free the world from tyranny or to support OPEC?
Our armed forces were not created or should be used as tools for corporate greed and control of markets. By the way, to control the oil markets was one goal of this war and look how that has turned out. Gas could hit $7 gallon by the end of the year. "Heck of a job George Bush!"
There is a big difference between WWII and the Iraq war. WWII had to be fought, the Iraq war was an invention by George Bush.
Patriots will end this war and the McBush''s will fight this and other endless wars. I pray for our troops and wish them a speedy return home where they belong. - Reply to this comment
