- When Bush''s ''legacy'' is reviewed postmortem in the decades to come there will probably be a lot more info coming out that will further *** his actions. We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. The neo cons were nefarious, uncompromising, angry radicals within the Republican party that came to power as moderates. The fact is that if the left wing socialists of the Democratic Party had been in power there would have been just as much BS going on in other arenas.
Compromise is the order of this country. Radicals can push and pull but it is the great compromisers that make headway. No doubt that some compromises eventually come back to hurt us, like the slavery issue. But the founders in that case knew there were bigger fish to fry at the time.
Radicals are good for stirring up a fever against tyranny but not so good for running a country. Tom Paine was a wonderful agitator and great speech writer but once the country found its footing the government no longer needed his services. He died a pauper in England. The founding fathers knew we needed calm heads and hearts to build the nation.
Then the neocons got into power and helped our country move into 2nd rate status militarily and economically. - Reply to this comment

- To compare Bush to Truman is an insult to Truman, who at least could admit a mistake and most importantly told the truth.
This administration is culpable of various impeachable offenses and, though several have ended up in prison, those most responsible still walk free. Bush''s legacy should be jail time. He should be made to pay for breaking the law just as any criminal would be.
There are so many stupid decisions made that one loses count. If Condolleeza had paid attention 9/11 may have been thwarted. If we had kept our mind on Afghanistan, bin Laden might now be dead. If we hadn''t blundered into Iraq, more than 4,000 young Americans would still be alive and tens of thousands not mutilated. And then there is the nine trillion dollar deficit... - Reply to this comment
- That Bush has been an utter failure and disaster as a president that managed to win two terms begs an explanation. What it says about us doesn''t reassure me we''ve seen the last of his kind.

- Do not buy his books. Do not hire him for speeches. It would be really cool if nobody wanted to interview him after office. Just let him fall off the face of the Earth. What a complete disaster.
Sure glad I didn''t vote for him either time. - Reply to this comment

- Um, I''m afraid Mr. Bush is solely responsible for ruining his own legacy. The long campaign only means that more American citizens are getting involved. - Reply to this comment
- Conservative nit wits would like to think that George Bush will be seen more favorably in light of history in several years.
The worst of the worst of the worst of the worst. The bottom of the bucket.
History will show this illegitimate President as the man who eviscerated the treasury, worsened relations in the Middle East at the the dawn of the most critical era in history for energy, denigrated American military standards, ignored climate change at the critical juncture, ignored regulation of any kind (Enron, banks), stood with his head up his rear as jobs went overseas, pumped the Supreme Court with no-brain nincompoops just like him,and on and on and on.
He will be seen as the architect of the decline of the USA.
You really have to be brain dead to not see it. - Reply to this comment
- Once again the Neocons avoid all responsibility. the NRO seeks to blame the bush legacy on the long campaign? Wow, now i''ve heard it all.
No one can be blamed for the dismal failure of this administration and anything it touches other than Bush!!! NRO, get over it, you and the rest of the corporate media have no chance at propping this man up anymore as you''ve done over the last 7 years. give it up, he''s toast and is now correctly regarded as the WORST president we''ve ever had. - Reply to this comment

The U.S. system is worse. Too many experts have done as you suggested and concluded that. The rest of the developed world is laughing at our incompetence and blind obedience to ''principles of capitalism'' when applied to things like health care.
The capitalist way for health professionals to make a profit is to deny you health care that you paid for: welcome to the United States!! - Reply to this comment
- inadequate health care, inadqueate health insurance, medicare prescription drug costs
You should check out the state run health care programs in Western Europe and Eastern Europe, then tell us the U.S. system is worse, Good Luck! - Reply to this comment

No worries the Bush legacy of absolute failure will last as century at least.
First is the failed invasion / occupation that alonewill outlive his presidency. No other president in US history has launched a failed preemptive military campaign of this nature. Our defense has been spread so thin, worn ragged and outsourced to such a degree that we are less safe the when Bush took office. Our military bases and VA hospitals are slums and our veterans are regularly denied adequate care.
Next we have failed government across the board, FEMA, DHS, FAA, FDA, CIA, FBI, mine safety, etc. Katrina response, unsafe imports from China.
Then there is his economic failures, BIGGEST deficit in US history, tax cuts for the rich only, hidden tax increases for the middle class and the poor. He can take credit for the run away gas, oil and commodities, record borrowing from the Arab states & Asia turning US into world''s largest debtor nation.
Oh did I mention run away illegal immigration and Bush''s failure to even enforce the laws on the books.
Can leave out torture and illegal spying.
Don''t forget using the DOJ as for political retribution.
There''s the small issue of outing a CIA operative.
Just wait till the Dems have a filibuster proof majority in 2009. That''s when Bush''s legacy will be cemented...

- One reason Truman achieved a better rating later in history was because he at least won a war. Bush can only be credited with losses in wars against poverty, inadequate health care, inadqueate health insurance, medicare prescription drug costs, energy costs, dollar value, trade balances, deficits, debt, mortgage loans, Iraq, maybe a resurgent Taliban in Pakistan/Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden, etc. If any winning takes place, it will be in the victory column of his successor. And I suspect it will be because whatever losing strategy Bush used was rejected by that same successor.

- Bush''s "Legacy" - Death, Destruction, Debt and Deception. History won''t be kind to this man and his administration. Hopefully at some point in the future, the Justice department will hold him and his cohorts responsible for the horrific mess we are in. God Bless America and our brave troops who serve our country DESPITE the fact that our "Commander and Chief" started an illegal war and has nearly bankrupted out economy in the process. He, Cheney and the rest will surely burn in hell for their crimes against humanity.

- My, my ... it appears The Shrub is just misunderstood. No ... he really wasn''t a drunken failure in his pathetic youth. He was victim of temptation. No ... he really didn''t desert his country in a time of war. He just needed a little break. I boggles the mind to think what kind of alternative history Hanson and his cronies will be cranking out down at the Ministry of Truth ... aka the George W. Bush Library at SMU.
