If you use the figures in the article, there are ~10,000 cases of Cervical cancer per year. Considering that there would be at least 500,000 vaccinations per year, you would still need to average $18,000 per cancer patient to make the cost break even. And that is only true if there is no cost for side effects from the vaccine.

From a cost/benefit analysis, it may be better to only make this mandatory after the vaccine is available in generic and more is known in long term studies.

How much does cervical cancer treatment cost? Consider that many cancer victims will be covered by govt programs. I would guess the $360 is a small investment that would pay big dividends.

So for all who believe this vaccine should be manditory...How many children at $360 per child do you want to cover with your tax money? 5, 10, 100? This increase would have to last until the vaccine become generic.

If you don't wish to pay more taxes, what would you elimanate to pay for this new mandatory vaccination?

And don't be too hard on those who don't wish for their child to particpate...at least you won't be paying for it.

Let's say your daughter is a virgin but marries a guy with HPV. Then what? Or what if she gets raped and contracts HPV. Then what?

Don't be so mindlessly moralistic.

Crazy religious right neocons!! "If we give a girl this vaccine, she will run right out and start having unprotected $ex with every boy she meets."

Yeah, right, you idiots! We shouldn't promote stemcell reaseaarch either.

Let's all join hands and walk backwards into the dark ages.

Good luck with that venture. I hope for your sake you don't have an emotionally healthy child.

By the way, you are from the same school of those who objected to smallpox vaccinations

This vaccine does not protect against all strains of HPV - just 'some' of them. So forcing the vaccine does not guarantee you are not at risk for HPV. Wake up people! This is a big time money making scam by big business!!!

Why does no one seem to think that the boy should also be vaccinated? Since both sexes can catch HPV, both should be vaccinated. That way, the chances that anyone else would catch HPV.

At the current cost of $360 per child, and the limited number of children in the trials (1500), it would be highly unwise to make this vaccination manadory. After all, we do not know what the long term effects will be.

The best plan for now would be to allow parents to choose if they want to assume the cost and the risk of this vaccination against the potential benefits.

Just because your child may abstain does not mean that their future marriage partner will have abstained. Your child will still be at risk.

I hope you don't live to regret that decision.

Just because one gets the vaccine, doesn't mean you have to go out and spread your legs! This is morality that should be taught at home. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
