Microsoft is not going anywhere. Nearly every small business and corporation in this country is using Microsoft products. You can't run an insurance agency, bank, or other business using a smart phone or tablet. There will always be a market for the PC.
What saddens me is how Microsoft forces you into these new operating systems. They stop licensing old OS's like Windows XP and soon Win 7. Then manufacturer's stop providing driver software for these systems. The consumer should have a choice when buying a new laptop or desktop. Would you like XP, Win 7, or Win 8? It should not be this is only available in Win 8, tough.
I say develop one operating system then spend the time fixing the bugs and upgrading the system. Don't go on to the next project while the previous project is broken.

Generally, ever other release of Windows OS is a dud. Windows 7-pretty good. Vista-horrendous. XP-quite good. ME-pathetic. 2000-very good. 98-OK,but forgettable. 95-very good. So based on their history, Windows 8 is set to be another dud. Especially since they completely re-engineered it from scratch. I predict bugs and crashes galore.

" If Windows 8 is not a success, a lot of people will be looking for Microsoft to make a change at the CEO level."

Why? When Bill Gates was the CEO we saw plenty of versions of the OS that were complete disasters. For example, some versions that were undeniably horrible were:

Windows CE
MSDOS 4.0
Windows 2000
Windows Vista

Windows 2000 was very good, one of the best editions at that time. I bet you confused it with the disastrous Windows ME (millenium edition).

The day Windows XP was heralded as "make or break moment" I stopped caring.

When Windows 2000 was released, MS even put up ads bashing their own Win95.

Most companies poking fun at their previous products' problems would not exist the next day. But MS was "too big to fail", thanks to predatory and other practices long before that point...

I had a Mac computer and loved it. Mac OS, well, it just worked. In the six years that I used it, I can never remember even one crash. But, I needed to upgrade to newer and faster tech and get a laptop for my work and could not afford a new Mac. I went back to a Windows machine and have been fighting it ever since. I hope that Windows 8 proves more stable than Win 7. If it gets good reviews, I will give it a go. If not, I guess I'll have to start saving for a new Mac.

Keep saving more often. iFixit and other technical outlets have raised concerns that poor application of thermal grease can lead to long-term issues with stability of iMacs and MacBooks.

Planned obsolescence. Apple benefits. Foxconn benefits. You might too, if you still have a middle class wage-paying job that they rely on after all of the government handouts they take are tallied (and it's far more than $0...)
