"The nation's largest public utility plans to dispose of millions of tons of coal ash from a massive spill in Tennessee." This massive spill was like a tsunami and literally wiped a small town out. TVA has many more of these "temporary holding lakes" full and it has no idea how to dispose of it in a ecologically sound manner.
and created a ecological disaster area measured in miles.

"The TVA letter said the initial disposal contract was for a year." What the TVA doesn't say here is they have enough hazardous waste they want to get rid of, this contract could be extended for decades.

The Alabama dump site was not designed to hold toxic waste. There is no solid barrier to keep the heavy metals and carcinogens from leeching into the environment.

And where is the EPA and conservationists?

Its a lot of waste to dispose of,I guess the landfill is as good a place as any. We discard plastic paper, appliances, electronics, cars, tires, waste oil,& garbage away by the megaton each day.
Its OUR problem,whether you're Green,a member of Sierra Club,or middle class,even a manufacturing facility; we're ALL RESPONSIBLE,if we utilize electricity,gas,& groceries...,it doesn't matter if you "Green,Red or Blue"!
I went to a seminar about 20 years ago,and it was about the Chemistry of Polymers, not the Environment...,the professor held up a disposable razor, and said,"we are throwing away BTU's(British Thermal Unit) of energy in the land fill,we should think about re-cycling this energy." It takes power(electrical) to make, package(paper or plastic) & distribute(gas) a product; energy that can be that can be recovered(up to 75% in most cases)...,but we merely throw it away & don't give a rat's a** about were it ends up! The enviro-fanatics will bellow about the "Greenhouse Effect" or "Dioxins/PVC's discharged into the atmosphere....,but its an issue we can't keep ignoring!

imprisonrove Do you really think the Republicans are the only ones raiding the national treasury? You need to start educating yourself on facts. Washintons is full of crooks with a state run media that does nothing to bring any of it to light. Bush and now Obama are spending money we never had nor never will. Wait till Oct 1st. The federal government needs $1.9 trillion dollars for the new budget and that money isn't there and China no longer is lending us money. Only thing that will be done is either raise interest rates thru the roof or print more funny money will decrease the value of the dollar with hyper-inflation. Nothing like paying $6.00 for a gallon of milk.

Both the Alabama and federal officials say the ash from the Tennessee Valley Authority's plant in Kingston, Tenn., isn't dangerous despite containing toxic materials like arsenic and lead.

But ask the residence near the holding dam where this is coming from and they have a different story.
Their near by rivers and streams are so polluted with arsenic and lead that they have dead zones near where this poison is leeching out of their containment. Health officials say don't eat the fish, they are hazardous to your health.
Their drinking water is so contaminated they can no longer use their well water with out it causing sickness, including skin rashes.

Did this mega corporation say why it is spending millions of dollars to ship this poison problem into someone else's backyard?

Coal can never be a clean source of energy. In the whole scope of of using coal, it is the most ecologically damaging fuel source. And will be as long as mega energy corporation lobbyists hide the ways the land, air and water are being ruined by irresponsible coal production and burning.

The TVA plans on shipping millions os tons of toxic coal waste to one of the poorest counties in Alabama.

So what if the poor people in that county get sick and die from the junk thanks to the federal government!

After all, they are only poor people anyway! If they want compassion, let them read the New Testament!!! The federal government doesn''t believe in compassion; it only believes in "out of sight, out of mind"!!!!

This is change????? It's more like 4 more years of George W. Bush!!!!

HAIL OBAMA???

It is time for our nation to abandon coal for energy production and to move to clean energy such as solar-thermal energy production, wind power, tidal power, and solar photovoltaic energy production.

Coal is a dirty fuel that leaves behing an enormous amount of waste and pollution. It is bad for our nation and for our world.

Gee, coal ash in Alabama-it's not like the military is already tearing down a little bit of toxic weaponry in Anniston, Al. On the bright side, all the attacks on the Alabama gene pool might help increase the caliber of it's football teams.

Why can't Tennessee keep their own toxic waste? Thank you governer of Alabama, what ever your name is. I don't even want to know your name. Is there going to be more waste coming to Alabama? I doubt this is all that Tennesse has to offer us to upgrade our environment. Gives a new meaning to the phrase "Alabama The Beautiful".

I'm just glad to see the waste stay down in the deep RED southern states where the marginalized republican't party of southern, white, evangelicals can choke on it, since they love the fossil fuel industry so much as they continue to rail against clean and green renewable energy that President Obama has been advocating, for better air and water quality as well as non-outsourced "liveable wage" jobs!

Now I've been to Alabama several times and as the line in driving Miss Daisey says, "from what I can see it ain't much". I don't know how you can hurt that state much more than it's already been. No matter where you go in the entire world you can not find anyone with a positive view of that backward state.

Yeah, that's probably why NASA has a major research site in Huntsville.
