Brilliant idea except if there were an actual emergency and the kiddles (and teachers) could not call home or the five-oh, the school would have a lawsuit on their hands.

- mdalerwill - Turned off phones in backpacks works for me. As far a attacks in schools, some schools here in Texas are allowing teachers to carry concealed handguns.

- recce007, CloverNYC,
Try this scenario: A Columbine-style attack occurs. As soon as the first shots are fired, the school goes into lockdown. Cell phone contact with the kids/adults in the school allows police to pin-point the location of the attacker(s) more quickly, thereby saving lives.
Most schools in my area allow kids to have cell phones in their backpacks, turned off during class time. If they get caught with the cell phone on, the teacher takes the phone. Simple. - Reply to this comment
- There is no problem with having a cell phone as long as ground rules are set ahead of time. If the rules are broken so is the phone. If more parents would take an active roll in cell phone use before a problem then there would be less problems. If you don''t pay attention before hand you don''t have the right to whine afterwards.

- TO CloverNYC: Exactly! I don''t a problem with kids having a cell phone for emergencies; just don''t allow it in school. Apparently the kids have too much time on their hands at school. This can help explain why our schools are not producing as many well educated children. FOR soem kids schoolis juts a party.

- Someone please tell me why a teenager needs a cell phone?

Four major reasons:
(1) Controlling parents who need to know where their kids are all the time; the kind who make their kids wear leashes
(2) Latch-key kids or inner city kids who live in and attend school in bad neighborhoods, and who need the comfort of knowing an adult is a phone call away
(3) Teens whose phones are pretty much an appendage
(4) Because it is a status symbol - Reply to this comment
- If these parents had half a brain, they''''d crush the phone, save their money, and lock their kids in a library. Eh ghad!

- Someone please tell me why a teenager needs a cell phone? If they have one why don''t schools simply not allow them in school at all. Punish those who do.

- Heres an idea: a cell phone jammer on school grounds! It may not stop them, but at least it would make it pretty much useless to have the phone out while at school.
