and she should go to jail for a very long time, along with everyone that helped her. There simply is NO justifiable excuse for any adult to attack a child.

sassalin, "mean and spiteful," absolutely. Punishable by up to 20 years in prison?? No way. That''s obsurd. The day that we enable courts to sentence "mean and spiteful" people to prison, our society is in serious trouble.

Oh, are you a lawyer? The article clearly states the charges and possible sentence. No prosecutor, no matter the media hype, would take on a case if he (or she) thought it had no merit! After all, the prosecutors reputation would be at risk!

Yeah the numbers are pretty scary about knife attacks in the UK I''m ashamed to say. It looks like the gang culture is trying to take hold - god forbid. Mainly West Indians in London, but white kids in Liverpool and Manchester. So far pretty localized, though outside these really tough spots simple assaults are on the rise. I''ve spent nearly 29 years in this country including 21 in LA and the only time I''ve been beaten up is outside my local pub in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Funny eh? However, depsite all that, the presence of guns would make things a hell of a lot worse. Killing is much more impersonal with a gun than a knife, it''s just easier.

Thanks for the update.

I first heard about this case last year and I am happy for the Meier family because I saw just how distraught and hopeless this family felt as there were no laws protecting their daughter from this act of betrayal. As an adult, Lori Drew had to have known better than to involve herself in her daughter''s cybergames. This was a cruel act with tradgic consequences for any ''adult'' [or even teen] to perpetrate. I pray the Meier family will soon be able to heal at least a little from the suicide of their child.

What kind of parents give their kid a computer with internet access and let them go off and be closed off in their room communicating with God knows who? And you don''t think the parents share responsibility here?

Ok, conspiracy, and accessing protected computers. where''s the freedome of speech in there?

Law wise, she''''s being prosecuted for fraud, not for what she said necissarily. Hence, freedome of speech doesn''''t really come into play at this point.

In fact she is not being charged for fraud. Go back and read the actual charges.

So murderers and rapists get a few years in prison, but make a fake profile on my space, say some mean things and she faces 20 years in prison....Sounds a bit bizarre to me.

And this after turning over every stone to find some way to charge the woman. Ridiculous. Three counts of accessing protected computers? What the hell does that mean?

It is a sad day in our society when an adult has to get their jollies out of picking on a child. She should have known better. Law wise, she''s being prosecuted for fraud, not for what she said necissarily. Hence, freedome of speech doesn''t really come into play at this point.

Incredible. The mother is supposedly a great mother now that she wants vengeance and just where the hell was she with regards to what her child was doing online? If her child had been speaking with a pedophile miles away, damnn right that she should have been involved and making sure to protect her daughter. You people are incredible with excusing this woman. I know a mother who discovered her daughter was having communication with someone unknown and she immediately cut off her computer privileges and contacted the police. This was the least this mother should have done.

These trumped up charges could technically be used against anyone who might say something unpleasant to someone else on the internet. It''s a definite slippery slope.

markbrookhar,

You are missing the point. She was not a boy that broke up with her. She was a mean and spiteful adult. Her actions are directly related to the girls.

If it were an actual boy I don''t think anybody would say he was responsible. How could you? Kids are mean all the time ( and they learn to deal with it) but an adult knows what to say to a child to hurt. She had inside info on this girl such as her mental issues. Why would you try to hurt someone that is 13 when you are in your forties and why would you pick someone that you know is troubled in the first place.

She is a horrible person and I hope she loses her freedom. She needs to feel an ounce of what these parent are feeling and maybe then she can see the impact of her actions.

USBrit....It was also alarming to us Americans that the article also was talking about London Police, searching people at random, with metal detectors to locate the knives...Thank god our U.S. constitution give some rights to our citizens against unreasonable search and seizure..

USBrit.....I just wanted to give you an update...Guess what kind of crime is rampant in London and England recently.....Knife crime...You have to laugh at your gun nuts comment...as though criminals won''t find any weapon to commit their crimes, guns, bats, knifes, clubs, swords, cars....and its all the gun''s fault....how about addressing the criminal, not the objects...Just thought I would let you know...Article was in the news yesterday.

It will be an interesting test case in that everything written on the internet is currently covered by 1st Amendment rights. What you write need not be true, may be totally outrageous but #1 says you can write it. Essentially what you would be making precedant for is vastly expanding the slander/libel laws. Do we really want to live in a state of fear about what we say to someone being taken literally? You say "I wish so-and-so was dead." Someone overhears and kills so-and-so. Are you liable? It seems to me that after this case you could be. I''m not saying that this woman isn''t the scum of the earth but as a precedant setting case, the result might be earth-shaking.

markbrookhar, you are right on the mark. They''re trying to set precedents that will create more and more lawsuits, more over-crowding of prisons, more income of tax-payers dollars. I''m scared for the world my own children will be facing in the years to come.
