Biometric Technology Replacing Timecards; Employers Tout Efficiency, Unions Cry Foul
- My company is converting to the thumbprint system. I have mixed feelings about this. It certainly can''t mess up my payroll any more then the human and paper ways of today!

- I think it is great there is no reason the INS should not have access to this record tosee if they are an illegal alien. I feel the prints should be recorded against the S/S for status of citizenship. This is to good to be true. Thank goodness for the machines now we will know who is illegal.

- Has anyone noticed that the US is outsourcing the production of US Passports to Thailand? It is on CNN right now.
Posted by barbaraf4 at 09:39 AM : Mar 27, 2008,,,
Yes I did notice and Thailand is doing the hard part because Wolf Blitzer of CNN said the Americans could not do it, which means Thailand has access to all the sensitive Passport data. But CNN did mention Americans can make the outside covers to the Passports! There may be some embarrassing truth to Americans lacking technical skills to do high-tech jobs is large numbers, for example the President of AT&T is bringing back over 5000 jobs from India to the U.S. but can only fill 1200 of them so far due to a lack of skilled U.S. workers and was shocked at the large number of High School drop outs across the U.S.. As the Baby Boomber generation is discovering, its becoming impossible to retire and turn the U.S. over to this underachieving group of Americans which will probably make the dream of "real" retirement the true fantasy! - Reply to this comment
- It shouldn''t be legal for private companies to register and archive people''s fingerprints.
There''s no way of knowing where that information will end up.
Next they will be demanding DNA samples of employees. - Reply to this comment

rick, maybe you should reflect a bit on the use and meaning of this word as you rail against those who aren''t like you.

- I have used one of these things for years. My big issue with the device is when the person in front of you uses his/her hand to cover a sneeze etc. Fortunately the device was deactivated this month.

- The scanner reads measurements of your hand and verifies it against the PIN account established by the companies payroll departments. It does not read hand or finger prints. It is an excellent tool for eliminating errors within the time keeping system; and provides effecient error free pay checks. Big Brother isn''t involved in any of this.

- It stores an identity with a handprint. The idiots will probably link in DOB, DDN, and mother''''s maiden name. Then, when the database is stolen (sold?), the employees'''' lives will be ruined but good.
Bad enough when a Sear''''s Credit Card file is stolen.

- [I''''m in favor of the Constitution as well, but tell me exactly how a hand-scanning security/timeclock system violates rights. Everybody is complaining about big brother and The Gummit, but nobody said what the problem is other than "Wow. A machine can do that? In that case I''''m against it."]

the main factor contributing to the theft of identity information is the electronic trading of personal info that you have no control over ... even though it''s information about you ... which should really belong to you ... w/ others requesting your permission for their use ... or even sale/trade. this is just another example of collecting and potentially re-using these bio-metrics for other purposes.
now they''re going to start collecting biometrics on citizens (eye scans, fingerprints, palm prints, facial recognition, and even walking gape biometrics).
the federal govt is currently consolidating all info they can access to mine for patterns that they deem ''suspicious'' ... what criteria defines suspicious is unclear.

- [Many many billions spent on oversight of every individual in this country from iris scanners, hand recognition devices, security cards, to cameras watching me every where I drive or walk, to surveillance of my financial accounts, emails, letters, and phone calls, but absolutley nothing spent on oversight of the investment banks or the Bush administration. They want us to trust them! Wake up people! It should be just the opposite. Very very end times scenario as depicted in the bible.]

nice post. the constitution (that g0ddam piece of paper) was intended to protect the electorate from the tyranny of the govenment ... to provide rights and freedoms to the citizens ... not allow the government to control the citizenry. - Reply to this comment
- "A few years ago there may have been resistance, but not anymore," Dr. Peter Zhou, chief scientist for development of the implant and president of ADS subsidiary DigitalAngel.net Inc. told WorldNetDaily.com. "People are getting used to having implants. New century, new trend."
Not so fast, there are already some evidences of the chips causing CANCER, a certain number of dogs implanted with the rice sized chips on the market today have been having tumors growing around the chips themselves, the cancer risk alone will stop the chip. - Reply to this comment
- [What''''s the problem with a hand scanner? Guess what? Automated systems give traffic citations, too. That should be considered far more invasive than a hand scanning system that simply thwarts cheating and automates the right to safety and security.]

and they are ... as are surveilance cameras on every corner ... and the governments mining of the data of all citizens. - Reply to this comment
- Did the unions complain when the timeclock and punchcard was invented? Did they complain that "clocking in" unfairly forces en employee to work the hours for which he/she is paid? The hand scanner does the same thing as a timeclock, and eliminates the cards themselves, plus it makes sure the employee didn''t send his little brother to work for him one day.
