Their are people in this state trying to force this standard on the rest of the nation. California is the largest car market in the union if not the world. The state legislators are trying to use that fact to mandate what they want across the country and the world. They are abusing their power as they neglect the citezens of their state by wasting resources and time while ignoring real air quality issues that make people sick. Simply Discraceful. What do you expect here in California we grow the best fruits and nuts in the world.

We don''t want these standards in California. This is ridiculous. California is trying to mandate 50 miles per gallon on any car in the state and nation. Carbon Dioxide does not make it hard for me to breath its all the particulate matter in the air. The California EPA needs to stop wasting their time and work on the things that are making people sick. Stop wasting my tax dollars playing political games and fix the dam air. If california was seriously worried about CO2 emissions then they would have emplimented mass transit years ago. Instead all they want to do is play the blame game. Some one should sue California like California tried to do to the auto industry for the states failure to control global warming emissions before it was popular.

Everytime President Bush stands by his hardliners, he has moved 1% of the voters to side with his opposing partisans. That is because he upset 2% and half of them came back with hesitance. The delagate count is shifting Democrat with alarming pace. This is one of those events where the upset occurs before the election. Not good for candidates that don''t know how to survive a political rant.

The question is how to have an effective strategy. Is it more effective to let each state make a decision as to how to proceed in curbing greenhouse gases or is it more effective to have a national strategy," Bush said at a news conference Thursday.

Which he fought for 7 years and the Supremes and DEM CONGRESS shoved these pitiful levels down his throat, Claif has every right and an urgent need to protect their State after all it is their citizens that are at the greatest risk when the sea levels rise and the planet warms igniting more fires it is they who die.

The problem with California legislation is that it affects the entire west.

I live in Oregon and drive a VW Touareg SUV on biodiesel. I had to wait 6 months for my car because Volkswagen has nearly given up on shipping diesels to the west. You can''t sell a diesel passenger vehicle in California, and it''s tough to cull certain cars out of a shipload when most cars that arrive at the west coast are bound for California.

My SUV pollutes less than a Prius hybrid since it doesn''t run on fossil fuels, but it''s illegal in California.

There are not too many things about California that I find agreeable, but this dispute about the greenhouse gas reduction objective is an exception. I totally side with the forward thinking displayed by the California lawmakers. The President is clearly playing partisan politics and not demonstrating how to yield to the country''s needs. Being a good steward of our community and its resources requires thinkers to defy the traditional Republican partisans. It took 25 years for the EPA to finally acknowledge that too much ozone was not healthy and needed controlling. Take a trip to Mexico City and learn what unhealthy air contamination is all about.

"The federal government regulations will require automakers to achieve an industry-wide standard of 35 miles per gallon by 2020."

LOL 2020 ?? at the rate of the changes and ice melting it certainly WILL be too little tto late. The issue is not how many mpg''s the stupid cars get, it''s how MANY are on the road!
In the 70''s cars got around 12 MPG- those big Plymouths, Cadillac Coup De Ville, Suburbans

poop, you''''ve yet to explain to me how you and the Shrub you love are Republican. Lets see, $470 Bil deficit, doubled National Debt, trashed the Constitution, doesn''''t support States Rights. Go ahead and explain it to me. or are you going to disappear on me again? And by the way, we''''ve had "Republicans" in power for 12 of the last 13 years. So again, how do you blame this on the mean old liberals that make you poopus your buttus? You''''re such an easy doof to paddle.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. I''m an ordinary chap with two kids. I''m struggling to even keep my car on the road. And I need it to get to work. Massive petrol prices, road tax at 200 pounds per year, and the annual MOT charges.

They are taxing us to the hilt, all in the name of an unproven science. Don''t let the green nutters get their foot in the door. Seriously, you''ll regret it.

I too was unhappy with the EPA decision. The majority of Americans apparently recognize there is a problem with global warming/climate change. If Americans perceive that this was a subversion tactic by the US oil and car companies with them applying pressure to the EPA, then Americans will find alternatives in the market place. US oil and car companies must strive to exceed the California goals because many people don''t want to wait - they want to do something themselves ASAP. The US oil companies must focus on green energy and move away from oil. The US car companies must focus on technologies that do not emit CO2. If they don''t do it, they will suffer the consequences. This Bush administration / EPA action reminds us why Republicans should be voted out of office. However, I must say that I did strongly agree with GWB that the energy bill should have more action on nuclear energy. Reprocessing spent nuclear fuel should be a priority. I find it difficult to image powering a city like New York City on solar and wind. Nuclear must be part of the solution. Thank you Arnold for your vision and action.
