Comments on: Nearly 1 In 5 Vets Reports Mental Problems
Study: 300,000 U.S. Troops Suffering From Depression, PTSD; 320,000 Have Brain Injuries
- I''m sure that Bush, Cheney, and all of their fans on these boards will do like they always do with this disturbing news about our brave soldiers and sailors -- shrug it off, and say, "Oh well - they''re expendable anyway."

And I come back on the boards several hours later and .....
I was right.
How sad for our country. - Reply to this comment

You forgot to mention all those people (~80,000+) who served their time and were due to get out but were STOP-LOSSED by Bush. - Reply to this comment
- Gateway1 (&Floydzepp):
Not to mention the Rand report only mentions 1-of-5 in reference to PTSD and depression, not all the other types of mental illnesses possible. And it doesn''t measure those who have left the military since Afghanistan and Iraq who are handled by the VA--if they can even get the treatment they need. - Reply to this comment

- I''m skeptical of reports that come from the conservative Rand Corp. They have an interest in reporting or distorting things to look better than they are.
There are other more complete reports out there.
Here''s a good one that gives a more complete picture:

That wasn''t a personal attack. It was suggestive of you painting liberals (I guess that would be anyone less conservative than thou) with a broad brush as Ann Coulter frequently does. As such, it also mimmicks many of the things she says; it sounds like a broken record. The plagiarism reference has been most recently demonstrated by Cindy McCain. - Reply to this comment
- Can you explain again how if 1 in 5 vets report mental disorders, and 1 in 5 adult Americans report mental disorders, this is a story?
armydog2, tell me WHERE in the story it says that backs are being turned on vets. As for me owing them, EVERYONE owes vets. And I am a retired vet of 22 years service. What have YOU done for your country other than criticize it?

Did you ever take a military physical ?
Do you remember taking some written tests that may have made you wonder what the hell is this about??
If a "condition" exists prior to enlisting or it is determined that it was there before enlisting, you will be weeded out. Is goes for mental and physical problems ? - Reply to this comment
- "There is a major health crisis facing those men and women who have served our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Terri Tanielian, the project''s co-leader and a researcher at the nonprofit Rand.
Unless they receive appropriate and effective care for these mental health conditions, there will be long-term consequences for them and for the nation," she said in a statement. "
Don''t expect any help from Bushit and Cheney--they promised a cost-free war and any evidence to the contrary will be ignored.
John McCain has been pretty quiet on this topic also. How does he plan to care for the more and more damaged soldiers who will be returning from McCain''s Hundred Year War?
Or will he follow the established Repugniscum pattern of pretending that if we don''t talk about it, the problem will go away?
Time to dump the Repugs and take our country back! - Reply to this comment

- And, one of them with an untreated serious mental problem wants to be your next President. Rest light.

- Hmmm...
The percentage is underreported. Active military would be ostracized by superiors for admitting any sort of mental health issue.
Once out of the military, many veterans admit to having some difficulty. Unfortunately, many of them start using alcohol or drugs as a form of self medication, and some of them end up saying hello to law enforcement.
There are 13 distinct %u201Ctrouble spots%u201D many veterans, (Korea era to present), and active military experience, and they are any sort of difficulties with: 1) Alcohol. 2) Drugs. 3) Alcohol AND drugs, as a distinctly different issues that either 1 or 2 by themselves. 4) Controlling anger or assaultive type behavior. 5) More than one domestic violence incident with significant other or a family member. 6) Unemployment or spotty job history with gaps between jobs. 7) Underemployment, meaning good job skills, but can%u2019t get a job or keep one. 8) Having from 15 up to 150 jobs since leaving the military. 9) A history with law enforcement for drugs, alcohol, assaults, DUI, DWSL, theft, etc. 10) A history with law enforcement for trespassing, shoplifting, etc. 11) Going to jail for anything more than twice. 12) More than two divorces or relationships with significant others. 13) Two or more anger, domestic violence, drug or alcohol treatment, program failures.
Anyone recognizing several or more of these, should get a mental health eval, to rule out PTSD, posttraumatic stress disorder, or other issues. - Reply to this comment

Did you copy and paste that out of an Ann Coulter book? Just like a conservative to plagiarize. Did you learn that from Cindy McCain''s recent cooking page? - Reply to this comment
- I believe the troops were mentally ill before they went to Iraq. There is no valor in fighting a bogus invasion/occupation based on WMD lies. They should have split to Canada. No sympathy here.

- In the civilian population, the statistics for mental disorders is the same, 1 in 5 of the adult population. So how is this a story?
The military is under a lot more stress, yet they have the same percentages. This should be put out as a POSITIVE story on the stability of the troops we have, yet CBullS spins it as bad news.

"Millions of vulnerable citizens struggle on a daily basis with mental disorders that undermine their present lives and imperil their future. To underscore the magnitude of this problem, according to Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General (U. S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 1999), an estimated 20% of Americans ages 18 and older--1 in 5 adults--suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.
