I'm sure a Pakistani child dying slowly in agony in the rubble of his home, attacked without warning by an American drone, looking at his own intestines spilling out on the floor, will completely understand that it's 'collateral damage'.

@fink, If you choose to be a terrorist and are moronic enough not to distance yourself from innocent bystanders, then you alone are responsible for their demise. Collateral damage is part of war, always has been. All that is relevant is who is being targeted in an attack. Unlike Islamic extremists, America NEVER targets innocents!

The US do the same thing, only more often. The US makes wild claims that one of its own citizens was aiding and abetting the enemy and gives them a life sentence. Similar to death. Most of the time if not all, there is NO EVIDENCE, only that they 'wanted to' and 'planned to' or 'intended'. To the US evidence is in their minds, so why not put their minds in prison (with bodies attached) Pity.

Wow. The responses and the spelling are far more interesting than the original article, and are teaching me a lot about USA citizens. Scary.

But WHY, oh why, did this man have to visit Iran? WHY would anyone, unless without capacity for thought, visit Iran? Extreme stupidity.

Seems totally unsafe to visit Iran if you're American, just like Mexico and many African countries.

Here's the delima: When you have governments of two countries that are not known for honesty, you don't know who to believe. Realistically, I highly doubt the man is a spy. I would bet any amount of money that he's nothing more than a pawn in a political face-off. As for putting much faith in what our government tells us, forget it. The credibility of the key powers is highly suspect, and an innocent man is caught right in the middle.

He probably was a spy. Just like those 'hikers' who accidentally crossed into Iran.

The explanations smack of a 'cover' ... because somebody who works for the US Government would know the risk involved in visiting granny in Iran. And no layperson is going hiking on the border.

Those things just don't happen.

Whoever at the CIA is thinking these covers needs to be a little more savvy!

When will people learn, if you're an American Citizen don't go to Iran.

If you have former family members living in Iran, learn to skype. If you're a former Marine and of Iranian origination, definitely don't return to Iran.

Last but not least, who gave him permission to leave the U.S. to visit Iran? I'm guessing someone screwed up!

@Space_Cadet, What is your major malfunction, other than your extreme hate for The United States? Do you really like Iran and their criminal government? Maybe you can immigrate there, I'm sure the likes of you would be welcomed with open arms.

"@Space_Cadet"

Yes, that is a much more appropriate name.

"...other than your extreme hate for The United States?"

Yes, sometimes it does seem like he hates the U.S., but then other times he will say "we" and includes himself as one of you. : ) We, in Canada, would more than love to give him to you.! Then you could send him over as a spy....never to return. : )

And to think that perhaps none of this would have happened had we and the British not overthrown the Iranian Democratic government and installed the two bit dictator, the Shah of Iran.
