- One thing that can be said about Obama. This trip reaffirms that his desire for foreign affairs is genuine. There was no real advantage for him, politically, to go to Africa. I don't believe he made the trip simply because of his heretige either.
Obama seems to be compulsively driven to radically effect the world. On the one hand, his almost pontifical prose is appropiate. Where he lectures others to be more responsible for their own nations, to end corruption, tyranny, and a host of things, it is hard to argue that he is wrong. Obama has singled out black American men as being irresponsible and neglectful fathers. His message is at least consistent. He takes that same approach into the international arena and addresses their soverign problems.
On the other hand, if Obama is not genuine than he is at least, exceedingly narcisisstic and dangerous. If he is genuine, and with utter conviction continues to persue world peace using his God given talents, and if history should prove him sucessful, as youth everywhere hope it will, then we can look forward to a presidency unlike any we have ever seen. Change like this takes awhile.
How the presidency works out remains to be seen of course. Obamas foreign policy skills are superb I think. But our own economy could easily suck the wind out of those sails. I hope Obamas seeming affection for foreign policy is equally doled out on our economy, and soon. - Reply to this comment

The 'Cold' War ended after Russia came to its senses and Let East Germany "Tear down this wall" as Reagan had said. There were enough Nations that were nuclear armed that there was no winning situation that would allow Russia to maintain a Communistic totalitarian government and confront the USA + a large portion of the other nations of the Earth. Russia did the wisest thing they could, They ended "The USSR" and dissolved back into the respective countrys they had been (kinda) before Russia got grandiose expansionist ideas and conquered them. (We out spent them) (They admit it). But if the peoples hadn't been in an uproar about the high cost of everything the Government would have been content to sit and wait.
