This is what always happens when problems aren't faced head on and thoroughly solved at the outset--small problems grow into big problems and then are more difficult and expensive to overcome. This situation now requires multiple, overlapping, and redundant security measures. Also, more proactive prevention--we need to become overwhelmingly aggressive and killing, seizing, and taking hostages ourselves. I think it's a joke that it's been allowed to get to this point. They are on smaller boats in the open ocean for God's sake--repelling their attacks shouldn't be that difficult. Set up obstacles that make them exposed and vulnerable when they scale the hull and climb aboard--then shoot them. It's not that hard to make successful pirate attacks nearly impossible.

Interesting piece in today's WSJ by an ex-FBI agent. He claims that the Somalis are financed by wealthy individuals from Arab countries. Also, he argues that they are linked to the embassy bombers and comprise a youth band of Islamist recruits, al Shabab. They are not just thieves out to make money, but instead, if he is a credible source, they are a part of the terror war linked to al Qaida.

No U.S. captain was ever taken hostage by pirates on Bush's watch.

Now we hear from the OTHER news sources that N Korea has expelled UN inspectors and taken the UN seals off their equimpent for making plutonioum.

Hmmm, why does this sound familiar.

U.S. ships being attacked.

Americans being held hostage.

UN inspectors being expelled by a government suspected of trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Oh, I remember now,

This is what happened the last time we had a Democrat president.

Recently I read that the difference between humans and rats is that rats learn from their past experiences.

Maybe we should let the rats vote for us in the next election.

If Bush was in the WH he would continue to focus on Iraq and ignore them, since Somalia has no natural resources for him to exploit.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. will pursue new efforts to track down and freeze the assets of pirates, who have reaped multimillion-dollar ransoms for ships they have captured.

Ah Hillarry I think they get CASH ONLY....

Gotta agree there. The "Chicken-In-Chief" has already authorized giving a few of them lead headaches. If he green lights a shoot on sight order for any pirate & a dozen or so bombing raids, then we might start getting their attention.

In the long run its up to the shipping company's to determine what they want to do about there property and the sailors who are hired by them to transport the cargo.
it will probably end up that they will find it in there interests to have armed guards on there ships to protect the crew the cargo and ship.

Bagdad--get a life. Obama has clearly said we would pay no ransom to pirates and he's held to that thus far, so stuff your "Chicken-in-Chief" and bake it, dude.

As for Bush and his "Bring it on"-s, anyone with a brain can see where that got us--which likely explains why you CAN'T. But hey, all things said--I'd rather listen to you whine about Obama for the next 4 to 8 years than see another Bush in the WH, so I consider myself lucky.

Have a nice evening.
