The reason these thugs keep up their piracy is there is no fear of retribution. If they were blown out of the water with a hand grenade dropped when they come alongside they would think twice about approaching ships. If this just happened once or twice they would not know which ships were armed and would seek another occupation.

...agree with zippie... convoy system makes more sense, easier to provide escorts (good UN service maybe). Also more sophisticated means of repelling attacks. If the ship and cargo is that valuable, why not have appropriately armed security on the ships? Looks like the vessel owners are going cheap, choosing to play the odds and roll the dice on paying a ransom while putting ship and crew at risk.

The strategy of patrolling either the entire area or just a corridor is kinda-sorta-stupid: This is trying to find pins in a haystack.
The correct strategy to use is the convoy system: This forces the pirates to come to you: They have to patrol for you. You only patrol the convoy area: where the advantage is in your favor.
Now is the time to start before the pirates acquire stand off anti-shipping weapons.
