exactly what international laws did we break?

An unnamed spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington earlier denied the Chinese ships had violated maritime rules and said U.S. ships had been conducting illegal surveying, the website of Hong Kong-based Phoenix Television (news.ifeng.com) reported.

It said the incident happened 120 km (70 miles) south of the island.

Ma said there were laws about scientific research in Chinese waters.

The U.S. ship "violated the relevant international laws and Chinese laws and regulations," he said, urging the United States to halt such action. U.S. defense officials said the incident followed days of increasingly aggressive Chinese conduct in the area, including fly-bys by Chinese maritime surveillance planes.

China, as they do with every U.S. president are testing his hawkish side, thety want top see how Obama wil react to this provocative action. Hopefully the countries that are considered to be the "bad guys" won't see Obama as too kind and gentle which from their perspective would indicate weakness.

It brings to mind the sad incident when one of our 300 mph Orion P-3s ran over one of the Chinese mach 2 MIGs. That was some burst of speed the prop plane must have put on.

Any Chinese harassment might be cause to remind them: "fly the Wang Way"--straight down into the ocean like Wang the MIG pilot got a ride.

North Korea is already on a war footing, and China appears to be prepared to be posturing an aggressive position in their sphere of influence. They seem to be sending us a clear message; America out, we are claiming control of our own neighbourhood. Taiwan will be next. Two months into his presidency, and Obama seems to be in a mess. His first mistake was appointing an airhead as Secretary of State. Now what can he do, threaten to not pay the trade bills we owe to China? Confiscate their T-Bills? Obama promised change, but we didnt anticipate this kind of change.

Broke laws, did we? Like the Chinese broke laws when they sent spies here pretending to be students, while our genius leaders gave away our technology to China for a handful of beans?

Oh well.

"This is clearly a SPY ship. If China is going exactly the same thing 125 miles off US coast, US would problably have blown up the spy ship already.

Onca again, Americans do what they want & everybody else are wrong!

Are you really so naive as to believe that the Russians and the Chinese have not done the same? Or do you just choose to not believe?

"I remember reading that in the 70's or 80's we had a spy sub that tapped into a underwater russian military comunication/telephone cable. We extracted extremely valueble information that eventually helped in winning the cold war. The technology they used to tap the cable was very sofisticated and didn't require contact with the cable. This ship was pulling a "sonar pod" of some type. I submit it was a sophisticated 21 century version of the previously mentioned device used against the russians.

Well you submit incorrectly. The device tapping the cable lay on top of the cable that ran across the Russian Sea of Ohostk and never moved. To be a "sophisticated 21st century version" would require a cable to tap and I doubt that the Chinese have a cable that for some reason was 125 miles out in the ocean.

"According to wikipedia, "The mission of (USNS) Impeccable is to directly support the Navy by using SURTASS passive and active low frequency sonar arrays to detect and track undersea threats." Conducting Ocean Surveys they said, that's nothing but an understatement.

In US media this ship has been described as a "surveillance" ship and now a "mapping" ship. But when it's a Russian or Chinese or North Korean ship it's always a "SPY SHIP."

Call a spade a spade: It's a US SPY SHIP.

"If US coast line limit is 200 miles, this happened 125 miles off China's coast line. How does this make it International water? You are in China's territories. In addition, CBS, why don't you report what international laws that China said US broke? This story is so one sided its disgusting.
Posted by straightalk at 7:15 AM : Mar 10, 2009"

Try a little research before you rant.

The US coastal waters limit is not 200 miles, it's 12. Just as most other countries. The 200 miles is a result of the Law of the Sea Convention which proposed a 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone with rights over the sea and the resources of the sea bed.

The ship was not involved in economic tasks, it was doing research, probably mapping the sea bed.

It was not in China's teritorial waters.

It's hard to report what laws were broken, when none were.

What's disgusting is ignorance.

Obama made a big mistake by deciding to keep the military bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan. Once he let the world know he was going to renege on his promise to pull out of Iraq, it was a clear signal that he would not be able to respond to threats in other parts of the world. It was also an indication of weak character, of a person who could not be trusted to keep his word, and of a person who would succumb to greed for oil revenue over principals of what is morally right.

Yawn. Right.

A subject of which you obviously no nothing.

" Why else would China be so aggressive?"

Does the phrase "gamesmanship" ring any bells?

The Chinese have read this, and are acting accordingly. As Joe Biden predicted, Obama is being tested.

People think the US constution goes everywhere they do even if they leave America. It stays with us Americans as long as we stay in US. Once out of America it don't. Ye subject to that nation. Americans need to 'member that..
A military ship in China's waters. It don't belong there. I can say the same about American troops in the illegal wars that bush sent them in.
