It was my first visit to Amsterdam, totally oblivious to the permissive attitude towards pot. We''d been sightseeing at the Rijksmuseum and decided to stop for coffee.

Needless to say, I was a bit surprised when I found you could get more than coffee at a coffee shop.

I don''t smoke pot, but always enjoy a visit to a Bulldog Cafe just thumb my nose at prudish morality.

Same as for walking through the red light district during the evening.

It was more fun than visiting Anne Frank''s house.

jharrison: drug taking is not openly permitted in amsterdam. for pot, you can consume in a coffeeshop, or in your hotel room. you cannot consume it out on the streets. it used to be that pot and magic mushrooms were "allowed", but i think that the ''shrooms are verboten...at least for the tourists.

those dutch are a funny lot! although they profess one of the most puritanical forms of christianity in europe, they allows brothels, girls in shop windows and drugs taking is openly permitted in amsterdam.

It would seem that those who are in favor of prohibiting "drugs" would feel the same regarding alc.ohol. It would be consistent anyway

denn: as a conservative, how do you feel it is the government''s business to prohibit what adults want to put in their bodies?

Poor liberals are besides themselves. It''s good to see. One less brothel or drug cafe is always a good thing as far as this conservative is concerned.

For the one who want American christian to join the reality community, that''s the problem! Too many people are straying away from their beliefs! For those who don''t believe and don''t care are gonna end up getting hurt really bad. The man upstairs doesn''t bless those who don''t believe. That what is wrong with America, not enough believe anymore and all the *** athiest want to get rid of God and take his name off or out of everything, that''s not fair at all. We as Christian Americans should have to compromise with those who don''t believe.

Just noticed that the legalization of maryj and prostitution hasn''''t gotten rid of organized crime that profits from it (or uses it to launder money). Doesn''''t this speak volumes against maryj and prostitution being legalized in the US? JMHO

That is a good point. Typical of most news articles, the article doesn''t go into depth about whether Amsterdam has problems with drugs such as heroin or LSD. It would be nice to get more detail for a change.
