- While I _don''t_ agree with desertion, I wonder how many of those here who are condemning him are willing to join up right now and serve their country in his place?

- How awful that would be. If "( ALL )" soldiers deserted, peace would break out! Does that make it a little clearer? Sorry it was so confusing.

What if just all US soldiers deserted? Where would you be then? - Reply to this comment
- Leaving Iraq is one issue. But leaving some other American to do your job while you chill in Berlin is another.

OMG I agree with you!!! He should not have someone else die in his place! What a coward. (sarcasm) - Reply to this comment
- Why not? The war would be over. America would save $10 Billion per month. What''''s the down side?

I agree with not being forced to kill someone you do not regard as the enemy...but he is not in that position as a mechanic. Additionally, I would put force that there ARE some interests being served there in Iraq, albeit that the return on investment (lives, money, time, etc.) is rather poor. - Reply to this comment
- they all can''t jump ship and get asylum too.

- I wish this guy no ill will, I agree Iraq was fought under false pretenses.
HOWEVER, he DOES have an obligation to help his fellow Americans, and he DID voluntarily sign up for the Army.
I think he needs to just reconsider, and ride out his time there and get it over with. Life sucks, but that''s how it goes sometimes. He has 100,000+ other Americans with him in the same siutation, so he needs to consider they all can''t jump ship and get asylum too. - Reply to this comment
- cause-b should team up with Jane Fonda maybe even go to Iran and have dinner with Ahmadinejad. They can all insult America together then come back and enjoy the freedom the soldiers over the years have given them.

- a lot of morons think that we are fighting something or someone that wears a uniform, loyal to a country, wears a dogtag, will come to you in tanks or planes, that they will abide with the geneva convention..
IF THAT IS THE CASE..then we would had won this war in days but it is not.....
its a war against greedy people who manipulates a radical ancient ideology for expansion of power and greed.. - Reply to this comment
- We should make him Commander-In-Chief; Bush did it. When his Nat Guard unit was about to be deployed to Viet Nam he went AWOL, but now he is...well, we all know what he is now, don''t we?

- Take it from a guy who served his whole (drafted) hitch in the Army (68-70), I hold no animosity toward Sheppard. He went into battle once more than the guy (Coward W. Bush)who lied our Congress into the war. Good luck with your new life in Germany.

- What a pitty if all Iraqi troops deserted. The republicans couldn''t finish their oil war.

- They would have to on both sides but that would never happen so why talk about it. This guy left his men, would you want him to leave your son behind?

- He left his comrades to save his own bung. The war was wrong but an army can''t have deserters that don''t get punished. i wouldn''t want him in my unit, he''d run and leave us behind when it got tough and would probably sell us out if he got caught.

- Again, where''''''''s your evidence. You see, I am a liberal and I am also a veteran (Vietnam era). I think the image of a liberal spitting on an American soldier is a bunch of hogwash. Everytime someone brings it up, I ask for evidence. I haven''t found any yet.

- MikeT- Get off your high horse. Don''t claim this man to be a true American hero. If he didn''t want to participate in the battle then he shouldn''t have enlisted. I have no problem that he is backing out but don''t make him out to be something special.
It''s this sense of entitlement that has wussified America. We shouldn''t torture, we shouldn''t use potty-words. What makes us so much better than the rest of the world that we should fake-abide by a code of morals? "standing up for what you believe in"?
I think it''s time for all those who oppose the war to sit down with someone from outside of America. First off, in Europe America is a joke. In Asia they love us because of the business we bring and in the middle east they don''t care about anything other than what they''ve been brainwashed with.
Why should Americans claim to hold themselves to a higher moral standard than those who wish to kill us?
I can agree that the war is "immoral" but I will not stand by as people like you claim that the human species is beyond anything more than a pretty version of savages.
And you know what, this "immoral" war of ours may be making new enemies but at least they aren''t blowing up schools on american soil, yet.
I can''t wait for your response when that happens. Oh, bring them in, we''ll chat and instead of sending them to their death we can put them in therapy maybe...

- It is unlikely that Germany will grant him asylum. Their economy is greatly bolstered by the U.S. military presence there. More then likely they will return him. He will then be tried for desertion and sentenced to Leavenworth, followed by a dishonorable discharge.
For all you who applaud him, call him to defend you when the s--t hits the fan, no one else wants to. - Reply to this comment
- At any rate, it looks like this courageous soldier has just unvolunteered to take part in this lie-based criminal crusade, and I salute him.
