Why do we even waste time reporting on Russia. They are clearly a desperate country. If their leaders would just shut their mouths and play ball with the rest of the world they might have a chance to prosper, but the pride of their KGB/Russian Mob leadership gets in the way. They are now up their with the Irans and North Koreas of the world....all bark no bite.

All foreign investment is pulling out of the country because of Putin''s actions. Their economy is based on oil which will be severely cut into in the next decade by greener energies. Their military is decrepit. All their satellites are joining NATO. Their population is declining. They will soon be in border conflicts with China for land. Their closet allies are Iran and Venezuela. And they are re instituting dictatorial rule in the ever expanding information age (google cell phones in closed societies).

They even have analyst saying the US will break up into 6 parts, some ruled by China, Mexico and Canada. Looks like someone has been under communist rule too long.

Russia needs to just go away. Or talk to Libya to get on the path of enlightenment.

Your commie has no regard for human life, not even his own. And for this reason, ladies and gentlemen, I want to impress upon you the need for extreme watchfulness. The enemy may come individually, or he may come in strength. He may even come in the uniform of our own troops. But however he comes we must stop him. We must not allow him to gain entrance to this country. Now, I am going to give you three simple rules. First, trust no one, whatever his uniform or rank, unless he is known to you personally. Second, anyone or anything that approaches within 200 yards of the border is to be fired upon. Third, if in doubt, shoot first, and ask questions afterwards. I would sooner accept a few casualties through accident than lose the country through carelessness. Any variation on these rules must come from me personally.

The KGB government insists on making the USA an enemy. I think we should go ahead and nuke each other, get it over with. If there are any remaining people, perhaps some will find happiness. A fresh start from the dirt is needed.

So I start reading the comments and people are concerned about religious militants losing their power? The religious right has no power to lose and they certainly are not going to start killing people in the street. You want to see violence? Tell some homosexuals their lifestyle is debased and degrading. Tell some Code Pink nut that Obama is going to escalate the war in Afghanistan. Tell some some gang banger to pull his pants up. Tell some Earth Firster that there is no such thing as man made global warming. Tell some vegan that you enjoyed killing that deer and eating the venison. Hey, even the Catholics voted for Obama over McCain and they are supposed to be against abortion.

This is really much to do about nothing -- PR mainly. The USA has averaged spending $500 billion a yr on defense the past 15 years. This compares to about $25 billion a yr for Russia and $30 billion a yr for China -- both of whom devote huge resources to protecting their borders. In terms of global power, no nation on earth is remotely close to the USA. Throw in NATO and SEATO allies -- and well, who can blame these 2 countries for trying to look more powerful than they really are ???

With Castro nearly dead Chavez has turned to Medvedev in a risky nuclear-warheads-for-oil coalition.

They are both forgetting it takes more than outdated missiles and shameless male bravado to succeed the US in global dominance.

The worldwide economic recession has given the Russians the impression they can kick America while we are down.

Over the next year, we will see other nations join the fray with similar power plays.

Barack Obama talked almighty tough during the elections and it appears he is in for his trial by fire.

yes, world leaders time their announcements carefully.
Russian Unity Day isn''t like the State of the Union address. He could have waited for the announcement of PLANS to move these missiles until another time. Trust me, his advisers were well aware of the timing and it is quite naive to think otherwise.

"besides, no world leader does anything of that magnitude accidentally. Do you think US leaders are the only ones with geo-political strategists? "

Again, Medvedev''s speech was addressed to the Russian people on the Russian National Unity Day. What are you saying, he was supposed to postpone it to another date because US happened to have elections on the same day?? Or perhaps he had to revise it, in case Obama wins?? Don''t forget that Bush is still in the office and in the upcoming months he can still do a lot of damage to American politics and economy.

I really don''t think there is going to be a violent, evangelical revolution ( I assume those are the "militants" to whom you refer ).

They may be closed minded, flat earthers but they aren''t going to be going on any killing sprees.

I personally still worry more about religious militants within our own country who realize they are losing their control before losing their power!

When Medevedev visited Washington on November 16, in his speech before US Council on Foreign Relations, he said loud and clear that with all due respect for USA, he didn''''t remember the date of US presidential elections. When he was giving his speech on November 4
(The Russian National Unity Day), he was speaking with the Russian people. Before giving this speech, he had to revise it several times, because he wasn''''t satisfied with the content, and US elections was the last thing on his mind. To say that the decision to deploy missles in Kaliningrad had anything to do with USA election day is preposterous.

yes, imagine the Russians lied about something? That in itself is preposterous. You''re right. I have been shamed.

What I get a kick out of is this lack of knowledge conservatives have. For one, repeatedly posting the same ignorance does what exactly? I guess if I continue to post 2+2 =3, it somehow becomes true? Also, this post has already been addressed. That is not a problem you have to worry about, since you''''re obviously NOT employed by the federal government. Finally, I really get a kick out of the anger Republicans have when they lose. What makes you think you should be in control of the government all the time? You people are hopeless...

The ''''hacks'''' presided over one of the most successful times in U.S. history. Also, if I recall, it was you idiot conservatives who were whining about Obama''''s "lack of experience". Now that he has surrounded himself with people with experience, you''''re whining about that. Just cut to the chase; you''''re still mad that McBush lost to a black man. Well, GET OVER IT! McBush was going to lose to a yellow dog at a time when Republicans essentially ruined the economy. Fess up to what you did and move on with your empty existence...

TJ is the exact type of hater that will cause this country to fall.

It seems pretty clear that Republicans, other than failing to curb the Democrat''s use of financial institutions as a welfare device, had little to do with the downfall of the economy.

I''m a libertarian who would be happy to join your call for them to "fess up," if there is some possibility you know what you are talking about. Please, enlighten us. (Hint: It has nothing to do with "deregulation" as Clinton and Rubin have already told us.)

To be fair, there is a big difference between deploying a defensive system and putting offensive missile batteries on the eastern border of the Western world.
Russia is using the defense shield as an excuse. I am sure there is no one in the Russian government who actually believes that the US is deploying the missile defense system in anticipation of attacking Russia.
However, naval exercises a few hundred miles off the US coast with an openly hostile enemy of the US... that''s a bit different that protecting allies in Europe. The US even gave Russia the option to have some of its territories under the shield''s umbrella.
