"...refuse to negotiate with the pirates and make it completely clear that piracy will neither profitable nor tolerated. If the only way to make those points is by killing the pirates, then a value judgment must be made."
-----------------------------------
I''ll take that a step further. If they let the pirates get back to land, then take them out, along with many surrounding Somalians and their town, assuring collateral damage to innocent Somalians, their hometown, etc. This, as ugly as it is, will turn average Somalians against the pirate activity. Don''t put it past the Russians to do this, they can be cleverly shrewd.

Charlieot, good post about not negotiating with the pirates, thus teaching them that theres no profit in piracy..
The problem is, that these are privately held ships, and private companies DO in fact negotiate with pirates, kidnappers, and extortionists ALL OVER the world. There is a cottage industry of private negotiators working for big overseas companies and insurance companies who negotiate because they just want their stuff back, or their employees released from capture quickly.
So, it''s hard to implement your ideology, even though it is in fact a good one..
Oh well!

"I agree but in the past the Russians have been much more accepting of collateral damage than would be the west."
-----------------------------
True. That comes with the control they have over the press. They don''t have to answer as much for their actions. As I remember, the theater was viewed as poorly thought-out by many Russians, because several innocents were killed too. They may feel the need to redeem their forces'' ability a little this time, without of course, appearing weak.

More likely, the pirates will try to scuttle the ship, in a scorched earth move.

Newsjunkie,
I agree but in the past the Russians have been much more accepting of collateral damage than would be the west. Beslan is an example and the theater with knock out gas that killed a lot of hostages was another but indeed, it will be interesting to see how they deal with it.

"Russian''''s are more likely to sink this ship rather than give up their weapons or pay pirates."
------------------------
Don''t think they''ll sink it. It''s worth many Rubles.
No need to. You can attempt to rescue the crew and kill the pirates, or just kill everyone on board easily without the drama of sinking the vessel.
I think this will be Russia''s big chance to demonstrate their special forces and try to take out pirates and save innocents. Like the Germans and Italians (?) who resolved the European hostages situation so well.

"Those pirates signed their own death warrant by jacking more powerful warlords weapons. "
-----------------------------------
Nicely put. I wonder if they knew what the cargo was before they went aboard. Or if they exclaimed a hearty, "Well shiver me I-beams" when they looked in the hold. Oh boy, are they gonna get it when the Ruskies show up.

Just let the Russians take care of it. Just keep them bottled up until then. Russian''s won''t put up with the pirates BS and take the ship back.
