Cutting the flow of oil and invading boardering countries is all that Russia can do. Russis has no navy, starting with on aircraft carriers, "NONE" their subs sinks on their first sea trials, their tanks is 20+ years old, their fighter jets is 20 years and was built to match our F-16, that is now due to retire. Russia ICBM missles is also old and if the truth was known, I bet that 90% of them won''t fire "FLY" an their war heads is at "IDLE" all that they would do, if that they will fly is "crash an burn"

The last time a British government faced an international crisis over Crimea, the Foreign Office had no hesitation in dispatching gunboats to put the belligerent Russians in their place.

The might of the Royal Navy, which once struck terror into the hearts of even the most recalcitrant dictators, has been reduced to such a parlous state by the parsimony of Gordon Brown''s Treasury that the prospect of Britain sending warships to confront the Kremlin''s latest intrigues in the Black Sea is almost non-existent.

It is widely assumed that Russia would cut gas supplies rather than oil as a means of pressuring Europe. It is very hard to find alternative sources of gas. But gas cuts would not hurt the United States. Oil is a better weapon for striking at the broader Western world.

The price is global. The US economy could suffer serious damage from the immediate knock-on effects.

It is unclear whether Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or other Opec producers have enough spare capacity to plug the shortfall. "Russia is behaving in a very erratic way," said James Woolsey, the former director of the CIA. "There is a risk that they might do something like cutting oil to hurt the world''s democracies, if they get angry enough."

Although Russia would lose much-needed revenue if it cut deliveries, the Kremlin might hope to recoup some of the money from higher prices. Indeed, it could enhance income for a while if the weapon was calibrated skilfully. Russia exports roughly 6.5m b/d, supplying the EU with 26pc of its total oil needs and 29pc of its gas.

With US and European credit spreads already trading at levels of extreme stress, a fresh oil spike would rock financial markets. The Kremlin is undoubtedly aware that it exercises extraordinary leverage, if it strikes right now.

Global supplies remain tight despite the economic downturn engulfing North America, Europe and Japan. A supply cut at this delicate juncture could drive crude prices much higher, possibly to record levels of $150 or even $200 a barrel.

Any evidence that the Kremlin is planning to use the oil weapon to intimidate the West could inflame global energy markets. US crude prices jumped to $119 a barrel yesterday on reports of hurricane warnings in the Gulf of Mexico, before falling back slightly.

Reports have begun to circulate in Moscow that Russian oil companies are under orders from the Kremlin to prepare for a supply cut to Germany and Poland through the Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline. It is believed that executives from lead-producer LUKoil have been put on weekend alert.

Fears are mounting that Russia may restrict oil deliveries to Western Europe over coming days, in response to the threat of EU sanctions and Nato naval actions in the Black Sea.

Any such move would be a dramatic escalation of the Georgia crisis and play havoc with the oil markets.

Bush and the GOP are on to Plan B. LOL

The ONLY plan Bush ever had was to be EMPORER of the US---other than that--there is no forethought in any decision making.

think that is a lie. Because the President of Georgia readily admitted to invading Ossetia first, then getting attacked by Russia---if the President of Georgia knew and we are such buddies--what are the odds that Bush and company did not know? the fact is, Bush lies and spins so much, that anyone calling him a liar is likely to be accepted.

This should be looked into, and if true--Bush should be tried for treason, whether he is in office or not. Provoking war in any country based on political gain--if proven --means that we allowed people to be killed for personal reasons---that is beyond sick. Sounds just like Bush.

I agree with you 100%--I also believe, Bush will do whatever it takes to get another 4 years in office---what he really deserves is a life sentence of making license plates with his thumbs.

I am not a fan of Russia, but I believe Putin is a strong leader that openly tells the truth and does what he says.
I believe Bush is a weak leader that hides behind a fabricated war-on-terror, and lies about everything from reasons for going to war to denying leaking a CIA operatives cover. I wouldnt believe him if he went to the toilet and proclaimed ''mission accomplished'' (after all, he would certainly still be full of ***).

US leading experts analyzed punishing opportunities of both Russia and the West after the recent armed conflict in Georgia. Specialists came to conclusion that the list of potential Western sanctions pales in comparison with what Moscow could do in response. However, the US administration hopes that Russia will not resort to radical measures not to harm its own financial and security interests
