Wait a minute! Aren''t these "separatist regions" that are trying to "pull free of Georgian rule"? Doesn''t the USA support FREEDOM? Shouldn''t we be over there fighting side-by-side with the Russians to help these people get their freedom? We invaded the entire country of Iraq to give them their freedom, but we can''t do the same for these small, oppressed regions that want their freedom from Georgia?

Even more important, these alliegences are the exact same thing that started WWI. More and more countries got involved to support their allies, and, before we knew it, a small, isolated conflict between two nations became a world war. Cool down everyone! Let these people solve their own problems.

"The United States of America will continue to support Georgia''s democracy," the president said. "Our military will continue to provide needed humanitarian aid to the Georgia people."
---

I''m sure those care packages will have the Russians scampering back to Russia PDQ.

Hilarious.

the republicons are salivating at the mouth thinking about another war.

only thing is...bush blew his wad in iraq.

now he can''t protect america''s interests anymore.

8 years under bush & cheney & the republicons are still loyal.

i''''d love to see the republicons have their way.

perhaps they should get together & secede from the union.

i sure wouldn''t stop them.

i wonder if the republicons would start more wars if they didn''''t have the rich blue states to pay for them?

getoffmine, I do not beleive in American exceptionalism, Russia is in the wrong regarding this intrusion and attack, watch they will not withdraw, they called NATO a mouse. I believe in the difference between right and wrong, good and evil, in our history America has always been on the right side. The same cannot be said for the modern leftwing in this country. They do not require truth or facts they just critisize and blame America.

The case in South Os. is markedly different. Russia and UN forces were there as peace keepers only, there was NO UN Mandate at all of any kind that would allow Russia to invade for any reason whatsoever. The Georgian govt. in a bad decision attempted to retake control of a province that is legally part of Georgia as recognized by the UN. The Russians therefore, with no effort at all to resolve the issue through diplomacy, NO EFFORT AT ALL, simply invaded Georgia on their own authority. Those are facts, they can''t be disputed because that is simply the truth of the matter, even the Russians themselves admit this in a sense by saying they invaded to "protect" the South Os., but under whose authority? Their own. the conflict between Georgia and Russia was initiated when Russia INVADED Georgia. Georgian forces NEVER crossed into Russian territory.

3.
My guess is because there are evident parallels Iraq-USA vs Georgia-Russia plus Kosovo vs South Ossetia/Abkhazia.
BUT, as I see it, Russia, unlike US, did had right (UN mandate) to keep peace in South Ossetia, that is not a fact regarding US vs Iraq.

And you would be wrong. You make a point of saying we should all pay more attention to facts, well, perhaps you should try some of your own advice. The Iraq situation was based on YEARS of negotiations with the Hussein regime which consistently ignored virtually all requests by the UN. The US led a force of over 30 nations in an effort to compel the Iraqui government to honor its obligations and that use of force, at least in some interpretations, was authorized by UN security council decrees. Some may argue that, but there were at least decrees relative to what was to happen to Iraq if they continually refused to comply.

Don''''t forget smallpox. Russia has one of the largest seedbanks for virulent forms of small pox (like the confluent kind that is 98% fatal)

Actually, I dont know why any soveriegn country would continue to make biological contaminates. Once used (such as the smallpox example), and if used on a massive scale against any standing military, that country will be torched with nukes. Reason? To obliterate the opposing force, and to obliterate the contaminate....

The biological threats are just that, threats (not counting rogue organizations such as Al-Qada, of course)....

Of course Bush wants the borders to stay as they are---a major oil pipeline is in Ossetia--lose that and Georgia is not worth squat to NATO or to Europe.

Agreed. Now, taking the "headlines", for instance, the dummy libs would be more comfortable with Russia just rolling over Poland unapposed, than the Pols standing up with our help in defending themselves.

Just another sign that the libs are dummies....

getoffmine, god forbid you would side withthe United States, just blaming Bush is the only thing you people seem to be able to do, never support and urgument with facts just blame Bush and America, that''s the easy way and unfortunately the only thing the 67 percenters like you are seemingly capable of.

3. Why Bush returned to war in Iraq and declared that what was done there was correct?
My guess is because there are evident parallels Iraq-USA vs Georgia-Russia plus Kosovo vs South Ossetia/Abkhazia.
Everyone can compare these cases and make own conclusions.
BUT, as I see it, Russia, unlike US, did had right (UN mandate) to keep peace in South Ossetia, that is not a fact regarding US vs Iraq.
And what is "disproportionate" can''t be discussed until the whole picture of the "incident" is restored and supported by real approved facts.

4. Unfortunately the "news makers" prooved what might be guessed: there are no independent ones. Each agency (almost) in the beginning of conflict followed certain "line" and ignored or dismissed facts that reversed the line. And evident facts were not presented but covered by comments/opinions.

Notice: Georgia initiated conflict (this is now accepted by all sides, I guess). But West from the very beginning, when Saakashvili said that it was started by Russia, labeled Russia as aggressor. And still didn''t change the label though opposite has been proved.

1. Democracy is not property of US: if US claims this or that country as "democracy" it means ONLY that the US political technologies are applied (successfully) there. It is not democracy as expressed will of people, but "american democracy" - manipulated will. Probably, 90-95% of all "democracies" are of the same nature, but Georgia is even not a good sample of it (just remember last elections of president and Saakashvily methods...).
And why do you (US) use word democracy as absolute undisputable value? Just think about it and about word freedom.

2. Why there are so many declarations based on minimal, incorrect (unconfirmed), or "guessed" information?
It seems that everyone tries to use this war to gain benefits and any sign or even probability is used as FACT?
At least if news agencies can make "errors", polititians do not have this right.
Do not say that Russia needs to do things faster because you wish so - say what you will (or, better, would) do if Russia won''t do the thing in time.
And DO NOT FORGET that Georgia also has obligations.
Or "small country - small responsibility"?
