I understand the concern Russia must have. If i were them i would also be concerned. Rice needs to keep her mouth shut and the current regime should not be making deals of any kind for our country since they are on their way out. Russia knows how weak our economy is at this point and there is no way we could be a threat to Russia. I am hoping with bush gone we can resume negotiatioins to a peaceful relationship once again.

Another Cheney/Bush/Neocon foreign policy disaster.

I thought the Soviet Union/Russia were Condi Rice''s so-called area of expertise. And she acts surprised by the Russians'' response, characterizing it as, "bizarre" -- ???!!!!

If she were on top of the situation, she wouldn''t sound so confused and flustered by Russia''s reaction and confrontational attitude.

Can the Rethuglicans get ANYTHING right on foreign policy -- or anything else, for that matter? And they want to run things for another 4-8 years!!!!??????

I commend your ability to articulate your thoughts so well in a second language. To add to your points, if the average american took a little more time to try to understand cultures other than their own, they may spend a lot less of their time at war.

I am Russian and that''s what I thought: that''s not an intent when two big countries mad each other. It''s just because their leaders think they should be liked by people for their working a lot, seeking profits for their countries. But this is nothing without respect for others - Americans for Russians (oh thugs! oh lawless ones!), Russians for Americans (oh bullies! oh sly ones!). May be it would be better if Bush had spent a little more time home than in the office trying to talk to their dearest people, have a good time, and the same for Putin and Medvedev. I mean it''s better not to work at all than to work like they had. I mean the old way we are used to work (however hard worked) is not exactly the scope of a man, not the astuteness. And the more you work the harder to keep to the correct path. And the US administration is much too active and industrious. And I wonder if Russia''s government can be calm enough to abstain from superfluous moves. You know too hard working as well as too much thinking is ugly even in an everyday life. That''s what brings troubles for other people.

Krappy reporting by CBS, Russia did not ''threaten the US'', but rather Poland if they hosted the missiles.
Also, contrary to the same CBS report, the defense missiles do not just target ''Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles''. There will be skip-loads of missiles based there, most capable of targetting Russia itself.
Krappy stuff CBS, krappy stuff.

"remember when bush said we''''ld pay for the war with iraqi oil? lol! hahahahahaaaaaa" Posted by ndpindent-ru

At the time that he spewed that BS, did you ask yourself the obvious question, since they did not ask for our "services", then by what right would we demand they pay for them?

I asked, and could find absolutely no sane logic, only the assumption that bush would take the oil without the Iraqis permission.

"What do you think treaties are about." Posted by Michaelm07

History has shown that as far as the US is concerned, treaties are only delaying tactics to hinder the resistance of US expansionism, until such a time as the US feels the wish to abrogate them. There is not a single treaty that the US has not broken in its history. What do I think treaties are about? They are about BS.

If the Russians want to control Europe, that is a problem between Europe and Russia, not my business, and any effects of that are not worth the lives of our children. So what if Warren Buffet cannot buy another Rolls, or Bush Sr. cannot get his favorite Cote du Rhone, or shareholders in EADS lose their money, that is of no concern to me, just as I am of none to them.

Will two oceans protect us? No, but unlike most fake neocons, I believe that when it is time to protect ourselves, we are more than up to the job, and don''t need to pre-emptively send our children to kill and die so that war profiteers can get rich off of our fear and their false speculation.

You live in Prague? Fine, I hope you enjoy it, I live in Bali and Singapore, have lived here for most of the last twenty years, and do business in countries from what used to be called the Benelux countries and Germany, to Mongolia, to China, to most of the other southeast Asian countries, and I not only got "A"s in history, but I have also lived a little of my own.

they don''''t need us, are not paying us, and we don''''t need to waste the lives of our children, even if they did offer to pay, we are not mercenaries.

Hey brianbwb,

What do you think treaties are about. From your side of the ocean you seem to think you know plenty and maybe you spent a few days at a Marriott in another country and therefore think you know what other places are like - especially here in the former Soviet Bloc nations who are the U.S.''s best allies in Europe. As an American living in Prague, today is the 40th Anniversary of the ''68 invasion of Czechoslovakia. They used the same set-up for invasion then as they did 2 weeks ago - albeit it a different trigger. I would respectfully contend that you don''t know what you are talking about. I suppose you, like others think 2 oceans will protect you. You are wrong. Wake up the world is more linked than ever. You''re right Russia doesn''t want to destroy Europe but they do want to control it. With your logic how can you think what happens in Europe doesn''t affect the U.S.

Europe will suffer this winter because when Russia says they will respond, it will be with oil or the lack of it. A lot of hurt to those they are pissed at and a little hurt the rest of Europe just to remind them who has them by the short hairs. Your two-dimensional view is sad.

"I bet the cannons will be pointed at each other until the end of time." Posted by NSKDuke2

Unless the people on both sides wake up and realize that the cannons are only there to scare them into compliance, not with the other country, but with their own corrupt government, so the people will ignore all the corruption surrounding the missiles.

Then maybe there will come a chance for change.

"and russia is not our neighbor..." Posted by ndpindent-ru

Ever hear of an atlas, or know any Alaskans?

"what if your neighbor had a cannon pointed at your house? comfy now?" Posted by ndpindent-ru

Our neighbor Russia, has had the cannons pointed at us since the 60s, as we have had ours pointed at them. The reason we have survived so long is that we haven''t given each other a reason to fire them, but it seems that the first to make the dumb move will be us.

"The base has no propose and that is to protect Europe." Posted by NSKDuke2

This is where you are mistaken, the whole world knows the true purpose, to further the futile cause of continued American hegemony. Besides, Europe is not weak, they can well protect themselves, they don''t need us, are not paying us, and we don''t need to waste the lives of our children, even if they did offer to pay, we are not mercenaries.

Russia is now irreversibly linked to Europe economically, they have no reason or wish to destroy Europe, wrecking the world economy, and their own as a result (same as the use of nuclear weapons).

"breaking news! obama ask for truce after being nuked! lol hahaha" Posted by ndpindent-ru

Reality news, after being "nuked", as you put it, there is no Obama to ask for a truce, nor any Medvedev to agree to one.

You seem to live in a "Road Runner" cartoon world, where the coyote keeps on living after being blown up. Reality check, we don''t.

The defence missile base is 115 miles from the Russian boarder. The only difference is Russia can''t control the base. You don''t build offensive missile bases at the door step of the enemy,no you build them far away from the enemy, that the enemy has to go deep just to take them out.I grew up 2 miles from a missile base in Nebraska, now you don''t build missile bases in Nebraska to protect no you build them to attack.
The base has no propose and that is to protect Europe.Who knows maybe one day the missile base will protect Russia. If anything Russia can at least stay calm and talk about the missile base instead of making immature threats and statements.Russia and the US will always have their difference no matter what. Its the way its going to be from here on to the end of eternaty.

Not in the least, they would all soon be just as dead as us anyway, so what would be the point?
