NATO Demands Immediate Withdrawal From Georgia; U.N. Security Council Meets
- Let me get this straight. NATO was never going to admit Georgia until it resolved its territorial disputes. Fair enough. Who wants a military ally that has unresolved border disputes with Russia? Bush, that''s who.
So Bush goes out of his way to support a 40 year old inexperienced Georgian president who decides to pick a fight with Russia thinking Bush will back him up. After all, 2000 Georgian troops were helping Bush out in Iraq.
Now Russia has taken over the two disputed territories right under Bush''s nose and there''s nothing Bush can do about it. He has zero support from NATO and does that surprise anyone? The bottom line is that in no small part due to master diplomat and strategist Bush, Georgia is lost. - Reply to this comment

And you are a simpleton. Under the constitution of the former Yugoslavia, each of the 6 republics and two autonomous regions were granted certain specific rights, one such right was to secede from the union of Yugoslavia. Now while Tito was alive clearly that was not going to happen, but, with his death the instability and rise in Serb nationalism of the 1980s, that all changed. Kosovo was legally a part of Yugoslavia after World War II, not the Yugoslavian republic of Serbia. When Yugoslavia ceased to exist, Kosovo was well with in its rights legally to request it be acknowledged as an independent state. The two situations are very, very different. - Reply to this comment

- By sending its 58th Army through the Roki tunnel into South Ossetia, Moscow hoped at the very least to deepen Nato divisions.
The opposite has happened. Instead of arguing that the crisis proved her point about the need for restraint, Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, has explicitly endorsed Georgia%u2019s bid for membership. France may still have its doubts. If so, they remain private. There are two main reasons for Nato%u2019s newfound unity. First, there is a strengthening consensus that Moscow would have acted with more restraint had Georgia already been in Nato, protected by its principle of collective security.
As one expert with long experience of the region put it yesterday: %u201CThe thought of the US Air Force on its way would have deterred even Vladimir Putin.%u201D
Secondly, the %u201Cfrozen%u201D conflicts in South Ossetia and Abkhazia that stood in the way of Georgian membership have, rightly or wrongly, unfrozen.
Moscow%u2019s coup is to have seized de facto control of these two tiny provinces. It has done so at huge cost to its diplomatic standing and may yet suffer serious economic isolation as a long-term result of the conflict.

And with Bin Laden less hated in the world than Bush, I would agree it is a very sorry state of affairs that americans find themselves in. - Reply to this comment
- Wasted in Iraq, stalemated in Afghanistan, outmanoeuvred by the Iranians and booted out of Georgia by the Russkies, a broken domestic economy and a divided Nation. - Russia is just trying to reclaim their former status as a superpower by demonstrating that they can ignore the UN too and invade a sovereign nation like Georgia just like the other superpower ignored the UN. They better watch their step in Atlanta though.....those people are not putting up with any shenanagans.

It is simply ignorant to try and compare the Iraq situation to Georgia, the entire situation is completely different, one has nothing at all to do with the other. - Reply to this comment
- And according to data available from NATO as of April 1, 2008, 41 countries, NATO states and partner nations, had troops on the ground.
