It only makes sense that if somebody sets up missile bases against you, you do likewise. Also if Russia is attacked they will retaliate against the country that attacks them and all the countries that use that country as a surrogate, ie the US. It also makes sense that if Russia were to launch a nuclear attack, it would not respond with just one missile, they would unload the whole gun.

The grand principles you note are artifacts of a larger development, and not "causes" but contributing factors and catalysts. Neither Locke nor "Liberty, equality and fraternity" did much in themselves for Russia, as the first Russian serf would be quick to tell you-- however much the nobility might have admired them from afar.
