- The United States will have to step up pressure on Afghanistan. In case they lose out in Georgia they can run their Caucasus pipeline down through Afghanistan. Then their only problem will be getting it through Pakistan.

- Thanks to the Iraq blunder, the US is in no position to dictate anything to Russia. Our military is exhausted and our foreign policy in shambles.
If there was any doubt about the stupidity of invading Iraq, it should be laid to rest over this current crisis. Without the WASTING of our military and political strength, we would be in a much better position to bargain with Russia. One always bargains from a position of strength, not weakness.
There isn''t anything shrub can do here except bellow at the Russkie''s much as he uselessly bellows at Abamajhad. - Reply to this comment
- It appears that events took place close to Russia affecting it closely. How is it that they cannot act in their own interest in another country, but we can go to far away Iraq on a pretense of weapons of mass destruction and stay for a ''hundred years'' according to McCain?!

- There''''s also another solution: that is reincarnate Neville Chamberlain.

Or we (US) can just go to war with everyone who disagrees with us!! Isn''t that our present policy? Talk about the pot and the kettle. The greatest affront to the American presidency has done exactly what he''s complaining about the Russians doing. What a bufoon, er...Bufungool!! - Reply to this comment
- DOUBLE STANDARD MUCH
Recently, Turkey attacked terrorist Kurds in N. Iraq killing citizens, bombing towns, dead kids, refugees, just bombing the cr ap out of them....
... Leb. attacked Al Queda camps, ditto. And no reporting virtually anywhere, in a long protracted bombing of their sites, with refugees, dead kids etc...
...... Russia attacks like WWII into Georgia, killing civilians, destroying everything and killing what moves, setting up concentration camps.
/////// But anytime tiny Israel even thinks about cutting off power to the terrorists who celebrate baby killers, and aid terrorists of Al Queda - that is HAMAS- the world goes batshiiit---- double standard much ? - Reply to this comment
- "U.S., Europe Ponder Russia''s Punishment"
Are you kidding me? How about Russia turns off all the gas and oil lines. Hope the EU still remembers how to burn coal if you can find or afford it. Russia will just sell it to China or anybody else that wants or needs it. That had to be a joke headline. Russia may be a little dusty but the last week everything got dusted off And they got in some great field practice. Now that they are getting rid of all the old ammo they have a place to store new stuff and work on their supply lines to their troops. Say good buy little G - Reply to this comment
If we weren''t tied up in Iraq, we could do something about this. The Russians and everyone else know this.

- I do not support Russia''s invasion of Georgia, however I do find it very interesting that The U.S. is pondering a punishment of Russia when this country took a very similar action in it''s own invasion of Irag and what punishment did we receive.Like a child the world looks upon the U.S. as a leader of the free world however like children they can be influenced what we do good or bad.

You are confusing Saakashvili with Putin. Putin is the bad guy. - Reply to this comment
- The only way to punish Russia is to stop buying their oil and gas. With the Bush energy policy firmly in place, which of course is no policy at all - means there is nothing we can do.
Any measures taken against Russia will result in retaliation by withholding oil and gas, which will cause gas to skyrocket and destroy our economy. My guess is that is what the Russians have wanted all along. They win any way you look at it.
Our stupid, stupid government has allowed this to happen. No energy policy, allowing our industries, jobs and our money to go overseas - and borrowing from our enemies to keep our ridiculous economy afloat. There is no foundation to our economy any longer. We''re in big trouble. - Reply to this comment
- Is it really useful to ponder Russia%u2019s punishment? Here is a strong nation, with huge potential, large resources and great people humiliated by westerners in the last twenty years. The country is so strong that only the United States can be matchable in the world of today. What they are doing now in Georgia may be same as what NATO did then in Yugoslavia. The Russia bear has been pushed into corner, and now it is fighting back. All of this is triggered by Saakashvili, who put his personal ambition well above his people%u2019s best interest, with blunder miscalculation. Now it%u2019s time to ponder what kind of order the world really needs. Do we want to start the cold war by isolating Russia, or send troops to conduct the direct confrontation which could lead to the third world war. Please the world leaders, it%u2019s time to put the best interest of people around world well above person ambitions or indulgence. We need the Russians in our pursuing for more prosperous, more civilized and more interdependent world. We can not let the blunderness by guys like Saakashvili to derail our effort and pull the world back into the cold war.

- By the time the "pondering" is finished Russia will have completed its invasion, and will install its own government.
What you don''t want to be during these times is an ally of the United States and the EU. Better to be friends with Russia. They know how to get things done. - Reply to this comment

- Putin says about Bush,%u201DThe very scale of this cynicism is astonishing - the attempt to turn white into black, black into white and to adeptly portray victims of aggression as aggressors and place the responsibility for the consequences of the aggression on the victims%u201D. It is known as chutzpah. Putin%u2019s statement accurately explains the situation. Bush just lies and talks nonsense. Bush is a worthless piece of trash, and unfit to represent our country. He should resign or be impeached.
