I see some of the usual sad display of ignorance and intolerance towards others in these comments. A little travel and understanding of other cultures would help a lot in some cases.
A tragedy.

I see no evidence of fanaticism or extremism.

There were simply too many people in too small a space, and panicking.

Although, if I was at the mountaintop shrine, personally I''d feel pretty safe from a landslide.

This is a sad day, these are people who were worshipping.

Does it matter they were worshiping? I think it would be sad when 68 people get trampled to death regardless what they''re doing.

I think false religion and a lack of religion brings out the worst in people. You are just an atheist that likes to bash those of faith. You are your own god a ledgend in your own mind.

How do you know your religion isn''t false?

To xraytwonine: your theory is fascinating albeit flawed. I suggest that you consider that the United States is better at crowd control and that it has nothing to do with "social and moral education." You might want to recall a couple of things that might compromise your theory: there have been people knocked down and stepped on in American stores when holiday/Christmas sales begin, and there was an episode in 1979 at a Cincinnati rock concert where people were killed. Careful -- your ethnocentrism is showing.

IRLiberal, a stampede is a panic situation and is a human situation. It has nothing to do with religion whatsoever. If it wasn''t for religion in people''s lives, this world would probably be a lot worse place. Your biased and hateful attitude toward religion sucks.

Sad, but not really all that surprising. Religion tends to bring out the worst in people.

"the stampede was triggered when too many pilgrims tried to squeeze into a small area"

Like China, such so-called third world nations seem have an incredible lack of social and moral education.

Each year tens of thousands squeezes into major cities for New Years celebrations and yet no one gets kill over a stampede so its never the activity that causes the problem, its always people.

Not an unheard of occurrence at third world religious festivals and it''s always the women and children who bear the brunt. Sad.
