Getting them out of power is something that time will accomplish on its'' own, there really is no need for military intervention, but the problem is what happens afterward, when the various factions either loyal, or in opposition to the former try to advance their positions.
As we see in Iraq, we cannot tell anyone whom to have as a leader, the other groups will simply wait us out, then have their power struggle anyway, and the longer they have to wait, the more blood is shed as they use the time to solidify their base, and "deal with" potential competitors. - Reply to this comment

Once upon a time there was a serpent who was badly injured in a fight with another animal. It managed to slither away to safety but would have surely died if a benevolent man had not seen it suffering by the side of the road. The goodly man carefully wrapped the snake up and took it to his house, where he bestowed the kindest and gentlest care on the snake until it was healed and could return to the wild. Just as the man was releasing the serpent back into the grass, the ungrateful snake turned and bit him on the hand.
"What did you do that for?" cried the man, who knew that the bite of this particular snake was usually fatal. "Didn''t I take care of you when no one else would?"
The snake shrugged (no small feat for a snake!) and replied to the benevolent--and now doomed-- man, "What did you expect? You knew I was a snake when you picked me up." - Reply to this comment

Islamic terrorists back Mugabe
Zanu-PF plots with a South African outlaw group to bring more terror to the country.
Four members of the military junta now ruling Zimbabwe in Mugabe''''s name are holding secret meetings with representatives of PAGAD, the notorious Islamic terrorist organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but I have personally witnessed the effects of a radical change of authority.
Indonesia was a country where most of the people lived in fear of antagonizing the authoritarian Soeharto, because repercussions would be certain to follow. They complained in private of the corruption of the "first family", and prayed for it to end, but the real fun started after he fell from power.
Each small faction started their push to gain as much power as possible, government and corporate corruption became exponentially worse, secessionist movements started and grew into localized civil wars, crime skyrocketed, radical religious groups began to foment interfaith strife where there was none before, and new local "mafia" groups had turf wars.
Today most of the same people who wanted Soeharto out acknowledge that the situation is much worse now, and long for the former days, even though some aspects, such as the complete repression of Chinese culture, and the jailing of more salient corruptors, has improved greatly.
Btw, both India and China were British colonies, and each went through the same post colonial struggles, they have just had more time than Zimbabwe to settle most of their problems, their central power structure is in place.
If McCain should become president, and escalate hostilities in the ME, we will see first hand how difficult it is to fix a broken egg. - Reply to this comment

I''m not sure you''re correct on this. Zimbabwe was no more a colony than India was, or China. The latter seem to be getting along just fine. One can only blame ones colonial former masters for so much...
Cambodia, and Serbia, seem the recent examples most applicable to this case. In each case, a little muscle power could encourage a nascient dictatorship into leaving the scene. Sensitive over the Vietnam debacle, such wasn''t applied in Cambodia. The result was genocide. Two million dead, most horribly. Such WAS applied in the former Yugoslavia. The result? Genocide averted.
The lesson seems clear to me.
Many of those calling against ''action'' in Zimbabwe''s national tragedy do so because, to them, Zimbabwe is different from Yugoslavia or Cambodia. To me, it sounds like the problem for them is that Zimbabwe is black. I wouldn''t suggest you fit that description, just that that is the people who''ll be making common cause with you.
''Problems rebuilding infrastructure'' from colonialisms depradations?
All I see is women getting their forearms hacked off.

Correction, it was called the breadbasket of Europe, because the produce was sold cheaply to Europeans, and the native Zimbabwe people never benefitted. In fact, it would be safe to say that if the people were benefitting, there would have been no revolution.
As for your statement that "Zimbabwe%u2019s state-run media rail against a phantom international conspiracy consisting of Western powers and led by %u201Cliar%u201D George Bush, %u201Cgay%u201D Tony Blair, %u201Cuncle Tom%u201D Colin Powell, and %u201Ca slave to white masters%u201D Condoleezza Rice", this view has been proven to be almost totally correct, with the sole exception of Mr. Blair being g*ay, which we do not know, and at any rate is none of our business.
Any country newly freed from colonial captivity faces problems from rebuilding the infrastructure, to power struggles, to social upheaval, this is no different.
Leave the Zimbabweans to sort themselves out, they neither need, or want our help. - Reply to this comment

they were. They were called the League of Nations. It was the least the Westerners could do after the abomination called WWI.
They (the UN) can only illuminate. They can''t take action. They put their soldiers into harms way LITERALLY so that if they are harmed the world will knows about it. ILLUMINATION. They have no arms or power to do more than that, and that''s fine with most countries (including the US). Take a look at how many UN resolutions condemn Israel.
This situation calls out for more than ''light''. It calls for action. The US reserves for itself (rightly, many say) the ability to take action, when humanity needs it. Well, this is one of those times. Mugabe can be encouraged to allow free elections, or to leave the country, with little more than a bribe (a carrot) and a threat of getting a Predator missile up his *ss (a stick). No big invasion! No ''mission accomplished''! No dead American soldiers! And, a great chance to show hicks like yourself how ''impotent'' the UN is!
Its a win-win. Except... you''re still a hick. Thats something no Predator missile can solve. - Reply to this comment
- The U.S. and the other major countries of the world should issue a ''''harshly worded'''' statement IMMEDIATELY!
If that should fail, the nations of the world will have NO choice left but to issue a complete and utter CONDEMNATION of Zimbabwe. Let us hope that it does not come to that! - Reply to this comment

I don''t listen to Jay-Z, but even I could tell it was a satire from what little MCVet- posted. At the time I was listening to Brad Paisley''s ''Online'', and was tempted to think he was a 30-something who lived in his mothers basement and lied about his online-identity.
Then, I realized ''McVet-'' was a dvmb*ss, and the world was set right again.

Gosh, do I detect some residual anger over the fact that they tried to keep GW Bush from making a fool of himself (and the rest of us in America) over Iraq?
That they are still in NY is THEIR GIFT TO US!! They should have left years ago, but they''ve stayed out of some (bizarre) sense of obligation to the country that, more than any other, founded them. My vote? They should leave for Europe, a continent that deserves them, has a currency that can actually pay their salaries, and isn''t on the brink of becoming internationally irrelevant thanks to the myopia (and hard to ignore ignorance) of America''s red-staters.
If there''s a group of Americans that deserves the likes of Mugabe, its America''s red-staters. - Reply to this comment

There you go again repeating the same neo-con krap you may have heard on the radio or TV.
Just because the UN doesn''t bend over and quietly go along with every imperialist wish and war-mongering proposal of the Americans doesn''t mean it is anti-American.
Think for a second. It isn''t like the UN is owned or operated by a couple of countries who are sworn enemies of America. The frikking organization counts 192 countries as its members who make decisions jointly through discussion and democratic voting.
If you perceive those decisions as "anti-American", then basically what you are saying is that the whole world is anti-American.
Where do you think the problem lies?
America or the rest of the world? - Reply to this comment

Zimbabwe suffers from an 80 percent unemployment rate and, according to the International Monetary Fund, an inflation rate exceeding 150,000 percent. Since 1994, the average life expectancy for women in Zimbabwe has fallen from 57 years to 34 years; among men it has dropped from 54 years to 37 years. Some 3,500 Zimbabweans die every week from the combined effects of HIV/AIDS, poverty, and malnutrition. Half a million Zimbabweans may have died since 2000, while some 3 million fled to South Africa alone.

Zimbabwe Police Raid Christian Offices
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Police raided Zimbabwe Christian Alliance offices on Monday and arrested five staff members for interrogation, the group reported.
Faced with the very real prospect of losing power, the 84-year-old Mugabe and his party the Zanu-PF party has resorted to violence, including an alleged plan to assassinate Tsvangirai and other key leaders of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change Party.
Under Mugabe, Zimbabwe which was once dubbed the breadbasket of southern Africa, has spiraled into an economic meltdown that includes an unemployment rate of about 80 percent and inflation at more than 100,000 percent.
