Oooo, touchy about the lack of Irish participation in WW2 aint we. So you should be. Do you know they actually fired on Brit supply ships in the war, even though they needed the supplies.

Stupid as well as cowardly.

I share your sentiment on the other poster, but it is "Erin Go Bragh" - "Ireland For Ever."

Once again the US has decided to exempt itself from international law instead of being a team player.
The US has the potential of becoming an inspiration to the world to be more humane in the same way it has been influential in its advocacy of personal and financial freedoms.
That is my guess as to why many people around the world have expressed their anger at the US throughout the years.
It''s more about its lacking and cold foreign policy than the principles it stands for.

It''s like trying to enact gun control, what''s there is there. Countries might agree not to place more cluster bombs, but all of what''s already out there can hardly be legitimately accounted for, and secondly, if we can''t monitor WMDs, how in the world are we going to monitor these little cluster bombs?

You won''t take MY gun(s) away. Illegal or not, I will retain what I have. I''ve already warned even my own family, you come in unannounced at 2am, you''re getting your head blown off. I have no hesitation in firing at intruders that might invade my home. I think it is truly a necessary defense, illustrated by the Bill Of Rights our forefathers drafted.

The irony is how Americans pointed to the terrorists who were beheading people. And while that is completely atrocious, and there is no defense - those same Americans would do well to remember what kind of beheading is done with cluster bombs that do not discriminate.

For a year I flew over Laos in a command aircraft. During that time the weapon of choice were then called "CBU". Laos was peppered with cluster bombs and still has thousands of unexploded ordinance throughout the Plain of Jars and other areas. That was 40 years ago and they are still there. We (USA) has a poor record of cleaning up anything, from superfund sites to war ravaged countries. As an American living in Dublin I''m proud that actions are being taken to ban cluster bombs - and I''m proud it''s happening here. My hope is the next administration will endorse the treaty and seek passage in the US Senate.

When Bush refused to sign the international agreement to form a permanent war crimes court, I had my suspicions that he refused because he knew he was about to commit war crimes, then shortly afterwards he lied us into Iraq.

So, if the US refuses to join this agreement, it will be because they still plan on using them, and for no other reason.

So basically what this treaty amounts to is a mandate to develop more efficient landmines.

And this is progress?
