- criminal behaivor... I feel for the people of Myanmar but they bear some of the responsibility. They allow this regime to remain in power. It is they that have to remove this corrupt criminal regime from power. Till then a great many will die....
that is until the international community decides that the concept of nationalism is inherently flawed is the direct cause of world poverty and why situations such as this exist.

Actually you are quite wrong on both counts. There were thousands of jews in the concentration camps and only a handful of guards watching them. What was wrong with them that they couldn''t overpower their keepers?
This is not a question of nationalism. What exists is a brutal military regime suppressing the people. - Reply to this comment
- Questionnews: I understand the difficulties such an undertaking would have, but a U.N. action would not be unilateral and have more backing behind it. The U.N. would also be in a much better position to provide civil services for the task of "nation building". This should be the overall goal of a world organization. Otherwise it would just a deliberative body with little relevance, as it is increasingly becoming.

I like your style. Unfortunately Gates won''t let our troops on the Burmese ground let alone over their air space. They are however standing ready. It''s a waiting game. - Reply to this comment
- The post got messed up. It should be.
All these world organizations and alliances are supposed to be about promoting peace and eliminating dictatorships, but in reality have not done much of anything other than the token food aids, which almost always end up with the corrupt regime in charge anyway.

"eliminating dictatorships"?
We did that in Iraq. At first it was a very popular idea. (Just look at the voting records of the house & senate) but then it started getting tough & everybody changed thier minds.
Invading Myanmar for humanitarian reasons sounds like a moral right thing to do right now because people are in trouble and it may turn out that more people will die from starvation & disease than from the storm itself. But, if & when some sort of conflict were to occur while executiing this invasion, public opinion would soon shift & it would labled a mistake. Just like Iraq. - Reply to this comment
- Shawnp....you sound really stupid.
This isnt about "sticking our nose" where it isnt wanted. This is about helping millions of people and trying to prevent the deaths of tens of thousands.
Dont confuse the people who would like our help with the junta, who are simply a closed, repressive, military authority and dont want ANY foreigners in their country.
Having said that, I sort of agree, turn those ships around and head home.
The world never wants us to be the world policeman, but look who everyone calls when they need a cop. - Reply to this comment
- shayjo.....Just kidding, but I say we pack every third case of food with some Special Forces troops, to pop out, when they try and steal the relief supplies from the needy. SURPRISE !!!

- It is time that the world put a stop to these thugs that have a grip on power. Their disregard for their own people is so blatant it''''s sickening. When will the world wake up and realize that corrupt governments in these third world countries are being facilitated by the wealthy superpowers like China in this instance either due to their natural resources, strategic location or support of those countries that arm them so they can dominate their citizens?

There must be a lot of back channeling going on and it remains to be seen how the world gets this juanta off it''s destructive course. What they see here is a perfect opportunity for them to thin out their society. What the world sees is another genocide. - Reply to this comment

- another case of America feeling the need to stick our nose where it isn''t wanted. They don''t want our help............ so pack it up, and walk away!!!!
We can''t be in all places at all times.... and if they don''t want us there... hey, I''m all for helping someone who ASKS for our help, rather than doing what we always do, and try to be the "World Police" - Reply to this comment

you would be the first to cry out if the U.N. were to
have higher authority over any country,
Especially when it came down to Holding War Crime hearings with your beloved Politicians.... - Reply to this comment
- Hey, you''''re all thinking about this the wrong way. You need to try the "Beautiful Babe in the Bar" strategy. Think about it. We all know that in a bar, there is always that one gorgeous hot babe that thinks that nobody is good enough for her. She gets approached again and again and she turns everyone down. And the more the guys try, the more arrogant she gets. When we all know what would really be best for that babe is if everyone just ignored her and walked away, so she get could learn some humility. So, Burma is that hot babe. Burma keeps getting all these massive aid offers, and all the world is begging to help her, and she turns them down. The world needs to just say %u201Cenough of this sh*t%u201D, and walk way. Bring the planes home, STOP begging Burma for the privilege to help, and ignore her. Heck, within 5 days she%u2019ll be on the phone with us, like that hot babe, begging for attention. And then we can get something done to help those people. If reverse psychology works on the hot babe, surely it will work on the Burmese junta. Unless they have the clap. In that case, don''t answer the phone.

- Why doesn''''t the U.N. make itself really useful and put together a military force to take out the junta? Why doesn''''t the U.S. or NATO for that matter?
