newsterl,

Yet, it is all tied together. Those who do not have much money have very few means of entertainment, except for things like...which means more babies. If you follow the right wing approach and remove abortion and birth control, it will definitely end up being the government''s responsibility.

that''''s not exactly true. Our policy to turn corn into fuel is fueling the food shortages, so we are directly involved in the misery of others.

Posted by whatithink

How is using OUR corn grown here doing that? don''t you think we have the right to use OUR corn and crops grown here as we see fit, or is it we are obligated to feed the entire planet now because SOME people cant put a lid on their baby popping and overpopulate their finite resources?

"If you can''''t afford food I suggest you sell the computer you are using to biotch about it and cancel the internet connection."

I might suggest that a used computer is worth about $5 for a doorstop maybe, that''s about it, Internet is as vital today as a phone- for job searching and more.

"Not one penny for American Children''''''''s Healthcare!"

Far as I''m concerned that''s the PARENTS responsibility, if they can''t afford to care for THEIR kids they shouldn''t expect US to pick up the tab for their poor choices!

hungry1968,

Certain policies of the World Bank/IMF and huge subsidies to U.S. farmers mean that a good portion of the world IMPORTS food from US. Because many farmers are getting bigger subsidies to provide biofuel, many are not making food for consumption. The food that is made for consumption has doubled or tripled in price. This is being passed on to countries were people are spending already up to 75% of their income on food. If they are spending already 75% of their income on food and food is doubled, how do you think they will cope??????

====================================================

Just to add on what I wrote to you. Starting in the mid-1980s (thanks Reagan), many developing countries were forced to take away their agricultural subsidies by their creditors (debt = slavery). At the same time most of those creditors were giving subsidies to their own farmers. These creditors flooded the developing countries with rice and other food at extremely cheap prices. The local farmers could not compete and were driven out of business. Any extra money went to the creditors, so there was no net local benefit.

Within the span of 20 years many developing countries have now been forced to import most of their food staples from the U.S. and other western countries. With increasing food prices, what might be a inconvenience for many of us, has turned into a disaster for many who spend 75% of their income buying food.

whatithink....

Monsanto has sure been a great investment. It puts real meaning into the term "seed" money.

I would also not be too concerned people because most aid that goes to poor countries are in the form of loans. Many of these countries will need to pay back even more than the 200 million they are receiving after you include the interest payments.

You''ve also got companies like Monsanto forcing poor countries to plant seeds that do not reproduce. So those poor countries need to every year buy seeds, ensuring one of the rich firms gets a steady income from some of the poorest people on the planet.
