What a marvelous victory for Kosovo. At last this territory has separated from a land that practiced genocide and lawless violence against its people.

"President Bush said the U.S. would work to prevent violence after the declaration . . ."

Great! Glad to know Barney Fife is on the case!

Kosovo is already an Al Quaeda training camp, we just gave it legal status.

Russia views Kosovo as part of Serbia, no matter how many thousand Kosovo civilians must die to prove it. In a sense, Kosovo is Chechnya deja vu to Putin.

Historically, this hypersensitivity is the old theme of unrelenting Russian effort to short up the empire against Islamic power. Putin uses the seige of Beslan and the seige of the Moscow theatre and a celebrated but still mysterious apartment explosion in exactly the same manner as Bush does 911-- a carte blanche for whatever measure he wants to call a "war on terror".

In Russia of today, Putin has used his power to shut down the freedom of the press, has all but killed large-scale entrepreneurship as an oligarchial threat to his rule, has made the Russian system of justice bow to Moscow central control and has restored the government influence in a variety of ways resembling the old Soviet Union. Yet, even Putin knows Soviet days are over, and his own empire-building must replace it.

So, count on Russia to put on the deep freeze in relations with the US. Already, there is a rapprochment underway between Russia and the PRC, the like-minded dictatorship with a burning lust for oil supplies.

This time, more than mending ideological fences will drive the partnership-- Russia needs the cash, and China needs the oil. Count on this marriage to last a while, and for the PRC to eye its investment in fast-depreciating US bonds with increasing scrutiny. Who said the world must run on US dollars?

Telling you would obviously be a waste of time...when you get your head out of Bush''''s behind, maybe you would be able to spot one.
