To "Unambiguously Back" Freedom; Images Of Prophet Sparked Mass Outcry 2 Years Ago
- Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the jizya (poor-due), then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. - Qu%u2019ran, 9:5
If the above might look familiar, it%u2019s known as Ayat al-Sayf, or the Verse of the Sword. And unfortunately, it%u2019s quite a significant passage in governing the relationship between Muslims and the rest of the world - Reply to this comment
- [5.57] (The mistake; was cited as 5.54) O you who believe! do not take for guardians those who take your religion for a mockery and a joke, from among those who were given the Book before you and the unbelievers; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah if you are believers.
[8.39] And fight with them until there is no more persecution and religion should be only for Allah; but if they desist, then surely Allah sees what they do.
[9.2] So go about in the land for four months and know that you cannot weaken Allah and that Allah will bring disgrace to the unbelievers.
[9.3] And an announcement from Allah and His Apostle to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah and His Apostle are free from liability to the idolaters; therefore if you repent, it will be better for you, and if you turn back, then know that you will not weaken Allah; and announce painful punishment to those who disbelieve.
[9.123] O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil). - Reply to this comment
- barbazm -- do you somehow think that your game is really that difficult to discern? Just keep bulling enough, and as the comment pages turn over, hope that not enough folks care enough to find out for themselves. And, by the bye, just saying that I, or anyone else, "know nothing" about a subject doesn''t make it true.
As I said, there was one verse-numbering mistake. And you say these other verses are "non-existent". Well do you say then that thefollowing are not in Quran, and are not perfectly normal and commonplace translations from standard Arabic texts? If you do, you are, as I say, a liar, an ignoramus, or lazy. Except scratch lazy. That''s not an option anymore.
** All, including you, barbazm, please do not believe that I am anti-muslim or anti-Islam. I venerate the prophets of the thousands of years of our history, the lovers of good, and fighters for justice. I am anti-liar, anti-obscurantist, anti-vomiter of untruth.
Verses follow in next post due to character limit: - Reply to this comment
- michaelt302.
I believe in peace and coexistence of all humans. & perhaps if there is a religion that would like to consider myself to be believer of it would be Humanity.
At least in my faith in humanity it allows me to learn all the beautiful things that has been said in Quran, Bible, Gitta, Ramayan etc.
Accept my apologies if my knowledge of Islam in any way offends you. - Reply to this comment

I am not Muslim, I do not believe in any religion. But I do have knowledge of several religion as it is a hobby that I have developed after 9/11.
I do not like to depend on propaganda material and like to research things on my own. - Reply to this comment
- And by the way. Anyone inquisitive as to how muslims themselves portray Muhammed can look him up on Wikipedia.
The article there includes three depictions of said person dating from the Middle Ages.
Only due to the strict wahabbist interpretations of islam evolved during the last two centuries is such depiction prohibited. - Reply to this comment
- Please get you fact right before creating a propaganda campaign about a religion that you do not know about.

- Oldarm - I agree with your basic idea that nobody ever has a right to be violent or belligerent towards others due to their religion. However, I think you should be careful about adopting a moral relativism world view (that I''ll make my decisions and you can make yours and we''ll both be happy)
Moral relativism is a New-Age way of trying to discredit the notion that there is absolute truth. Ultimately, the reason many people try to deny that there is absolute truth is that it means they have to recognize their own limitations and faults - it is easier for people to pretend that whatever they believe is okay than to admit to themselves that they are sinners who need forgiveness. But if people can overcome the New-Age moral relativism way of thinking, and can recognize the absolute truth that they need a Savior, then they can be forgiven and reconciled into a right relationship with God. - Reply to this comment
- I say: With respect, you lie, or are ignorant, or are at best lazy. These verse quotations are indeed correct (with one slight verse-numbering mistake). Islam needs no defender such as you.

==================
I am quoting translation from Quran for 5:54 previously misquoted by GrymOne. I do not believe in Islam but it does not mean that I do not have researched over it.
5:54 - Believers if any among you renounce the faith God will replace them by others who love him and are loved by him who are humble towards the faithful and stern towards the unbelievers, zealous for God''s cause and fearless of man''s censure. Such is the grace of God.
The remaining 8:39 & 9:23 are non existent. - Reply to this comment
- Given my previous comment below re Quran verses, I will clarify -- in case anyone cares -- that I do not align myself with anyone who indulges in overt and carefree prejudice. This includes intolerant reactionaries on both sides of this debate.
This newspaper has every right to do as it will in this matter. I don''t agree with holocaust-denial laws, either, but there does happen to be a difference. Holocaust deniers are liars in the face of events; this cartoonist is commenting in an arena of very debatable opinion - Reply to this comment
