More on the CHRISTIAN Sunday blue laws in THIS country, classified as a crime you could be ARRESTED for in Virginia as late as 1988;

In Virginia, people were arrested and fined for such activities as selling Coca-Cola or peanuts, and for showing movies or operating public swimming pools.

In 1961 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Sunday-closing laws were constitutional. However, the police found that strict enforcement was impractical, and the General Assembly eventually enacted 21 exemptions to the blue laws. This led to such inconsistencies as prohibiting hardware stores from opening on Sunday but allowing drug stores to sell nuts and bolts on that day. In 1974 the legislature allowed each city and county the right to suspend or retain Sunday-closing laws.

Finally, in 1988, a group of Virginia Beach businessmen initiated the case that ended blue laws in the state. The Virginia Supreme Court struck down the closing laws because the numerous exemptions had changed them from general laws to special legislation, and special legislation is prohibited by the state constitution. The ruling was handed down on a Saturday, and the next day many stores were open for business.

And anytime a "firiner" complains about any of the nonsense that goes on here, the response is, if you don''t like it, go home. Well, this British teacher should have been a bit more culturally aware of where she was, and should have had a bit more sense than to name a freakin'' teddy bear after their religious icon. And, as an American would put it, if she didn''t want to play by their rules, she should have stayed home. I am glad that this kind of BS hits the news; it draws atention to the reason why religons have no place in running countries. They are not about criminal/civil laws, they are about arbitrary readings of a 7th century prophet who thought women were men%u2019s equal. Many copies of the Koran have been circulated in the US since the 1700 and many people have read it, many who are not Muslims. The Sharia law is not just, it is disrespectful to women, while totally promoting male domination, a morphing of what Mohammad actually said. Just because the Imams say no one can talk or criticism their religion means nothing in the free world, no one tells us what we can say in the free world...well maybe if this present beginning police state we live in right now goes much further we will get a up close and personal look...that is why everyone needs to support secular democracy. It is great because it tries to treat all citizens with equally...failing sometimes, not deliberately punishing people for having the wrong religion.

The one thing about religious fanatism is that they are always right, the other always wrong. There is no room for debate, and it is sometimes considered an insult to do so. It''s almost like the Christian interpretation of the Bible in only literal terms. The fanatic doesn''t have the reasoning capability to understand several vantage points, and gets confused easily. In their frustration, their anger causes them to lash out--killing instead of re-interpreting.

But in Sudan, it may be more of a political thing, to push religious intolerance to the frontlines of a war against Western humanitarian aid to people who are the targets of aggression. Some might ask, does the Sudanese government sanction genocide? Or do they just want to take over any land that provides the prospects of selling oil and gas to China?

Plus, you know America wants their Gum Arabic.
