Who could expect anything less evil?

Musharraf and many of the worlds most powerful and oppressive dictators count themselves amongst Bush''s closest allies, including the brutal King of Saudi Arabia.

And Bush''s successful bloodless coup, and first dictatorship, in America has given them a supposed blueprint for tyrannical success - Just do it, in the face of all law, civility, and reality.

And the masses will not believe it''s happening.

Until, as history so often records, it is too late.

Fortunately history also records that no dictator in history has ever prevailed in the long run, but unfortunately their short runs tend to be very, very, bloody.

However, the American people have been forewarned thousands of times over now, by respected statesmen, scholars, historians, and patriotic citizens, that their freedom was about to end, just as Pakistani freedom ended yesterday.

And if we do not defend it, we no longer deserve it.

Stezzer said: "It may be that democracy will never be possible, and we will have to accept that fact. Who would you rather have in charge of nuclear weapons. Extremist Muslim clerics or the Pakistani military?" I''d rather have the clerics. Best way to keep them from becoming extremist is to give them power to match their popularity. Best way to have them hatch terrorists is to stand in the way of public opinion. Not that people like you ever gave a cr*p what the Pakistani''s thought...

Not only has the Bush administration and the republican party destroyed this country, now their incompetence is destroying other countries. Record numbers of foreclosurers, record oil prices, $800 BILLION spent in Iraq, and Osama Bin Laden still on the loose. Republican mismanagement, as usual.

I remember this Musharraf just after 9/11. While he was willing to aid the US against Al-Qaida, he was also claiming that the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated by Israel. Go figure.

jowand, well said.

Sorry, but nuclear weapons and political instability is a bad combo. Hysteria on the streets and an unstable government is highly dangerous in a place like Pakistan.

Short sighted political rhetoric from western politicians is not helpful. The situation needs to calm down. Only then, perhaps, can the democratic process be reintroduced.

It may be that democracy will never be possible, and we will have to accept that fact. Who would you rather have in charge of nuclear weapons. Extremist Muslim clerics or the Pakistani military?

Musharrafs opposition is AL Quaeda and Islamist friends, plus US Liberals and European Socialists.
The Shah of Iran''s opposition in 1979 was the religious crazies running Iran now, plus Jimmy Carter and US Liberals, plus European Socialists.
Does two plus two equal four yet???????

There is no doubt that pre Musharraf Pakistan was riddled with corruption. Although democracy is the way forward, the west needs to be careful before it turns its back on someone who has been a good friend and ally.

Pakistan is home to both nuclear weapons and a lot of hot heads. The state of emergency, though disappointing, is nevertheless something the west ought to accept in the short term.

And why does Bush support Musharraf and not invade Pakistan as he did against Hussein and Iraq? Hussein would have already caught and killed bin Laden. Pakistan has the WMDs that Iraq did not have. Maybe Bush looked into Musharraf''s eyes and saw a kindred soul.

"Some of the aid that goes to Pakistan is directly related to the counterterrorism mission," Rice told reporters traveling with her. "We just have to review the situation. But I would be very surprised if anyone wants the president to set aside or ignore" the responsibility to national security that can come through such cooperation, she said.

If we review the aid currently given to Pakistan, and if we find it justified, then I suggest we introduce Musharraf to the same loan sharks we use in China and let them deal directly. Cut out the middleman and let them pay the interest.
